The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things (2006): Review
"A harsh cruel commentary on why mothers who abandon their children should never be able to get them back simply because they share blood"

Asia Argento's adaptation of J.T Leroy's dark look at foster care is not for the faint of heart. It deals with subject of child abuse, child neglect, drug addiction, sex addiction, religious extremism, and the desire to satisfy those who will never be satisfied for you. This movie clearly has something to piss off everyone and takes all of the disgusting tripe you see on the news and puts it all into one depressing story. The Heart is about a dirty slutbag mother who after abandoning her child decides eight years later to yank her son out of a foster home where he is happy and take him to live with her in a getto apartment. Clearly the child Jeremiah doesn't want to go and why the hell would he? Would you want to leave a family that loves you to go with your recently "clean" drug addicted birthmother who didn't even want you in the first place? Didn't think so. At first Jeremiah played by the magniicent youngster Jimmy Bennet is frusterated and angry with his mother he acts out of spite until his twisted momma decides to feed him cigarettes and drink beer with her while she drive around looking for a man to put her up for a few months until she gets bored and meets a new sleazeball.
As you can see the story is quite depressing the bond between mother and child is incredibly strong even though these two have a love/hate relationship and while they are quick to hate each other and express that hate toward one another they always come crawling or in Jeremiah's case running back to each other. We flash forward to eleven year old Jeremiah played by tween idols Cole and Dylan Sprouse who play a confused homosexual boy perfectly. To call Jeremiah confused is an understatement he has no male role models, doesn't know his father, has been abondoned by his trailer trash, hooker mom many times yet he still idolizes her and strives to please her because sadly she's all he's got. Jeremiah wants to impress his mother so badly that he dresses up as her and tries to seduce her current boyfriend and after succeeding feels the wrath of his jealous mother. The sad part here is how awful a mother Sarah (played by director Asia Argento) is her son is essentially raped and her first thought is "you stole my boyfriend". Fun fact the boyfriend is played by Marilyn Manson who is creepier here without the make up then he has eve been with it.
You might be thinking why watch this film it sounds terrible depressing and shockingly explicit...that is the point. It shows you the harsh truth about how some kids fall through the foster system, how some people should never be parents, and how we all know that certain someone we subconciously strive to satisfy even though they always end up disappointed. The direction is solid, the acting is damn near flawless, and the overall idea's present us make us think about harsh realities and how disturbing they really are. To put it lightly this film denounces the right of a parent to take back a child they've either abandoned or given up for adoption and in my personal opinion i agree.
