Resident Evil: Degeneration (2008): Review
"The only way to stop this spread of infection is to destroy the infectees' brains."
- Vampire2000
Alright, pretty much ALL of you MovieWebbers that talk to me, know of my obsession with anything to do with "Resident Evil." You know that I loved all three of the films and you most likely have fought with me about it (*EHEM*JR*EHEM*). Naturally, when I got word that a completely CGI version of "Resident Evil" was coming out, and that it would continue on with the Game's Storyline, and bring Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield back together, I was completely ecstatic about seeing the movie. The only thing keeping me down, is that when I first saw the trailer for this, it was on my 2-Disc "Resident Evil: Extinction" DVD, and the trailer didn't give a release date for it at all. The release of "Resident Evil: Extinction" on DVD was back in January of 2008, if I am not mistaken, and so I had no idea when it was coming out. Soon, I joined MovieWeb, where news reached me of a new trailer, and soon the DVD details. This was all throughout a very long and stretched time period. I ended up finding out that this would come out December 30, 2008, and that I would have to wait what would seem like FOREVER just to see it. Well, I finally got to see the movie today when it arrived with "Eagle Eye" and "The Bone Collector" from NetFlix. I must say that this movie was everything I had hoped it would be, and it is DEFINITELY fit of the "Resident Evil" name. Those who didn't like "Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children" should most likely stay away from this, though because this is a lot like that in the respect that it is an animated CGI film, and it is a continuation of the series, rather than a movie based directly from a game. However, for those "Resident Evil" fans, CGI fans, videogame fans, or just downright zombie movie fans, will love this movie. So I say here and now, check this movie out! It is DEFINITELY worth your rental fee, or even just the price the DVD costs! It is a great animated thrill-ride that'll have you chewing your fingernails! lolz!
The director of this CGI Animated "Resident Evil" film is Director Makoto Kamiya whose only other directing job was on a Japanese (Or Chinese, I couldn't tell) movie that no one on MovieWeb would probably know. lolz. However, in this awesome CGI movie, Kamiya does a great job in directing. CGI directors, in my view, must have a much harder job of directing than a regular Director would. A regular Director only has to worry about camera angles, filters, and actors and all that other stuff that goes with directing, while the CGI and Animated Film Directors not only have all of THAT to worry about, they got to monitor everything CGI-Wise and make sure it's all looking correct and that the voices are matching the lip-movement and all of that fun stuff. I know it sounds to me like an agonizingly long job, and one that would bore the tears out of someone. However, Kamiya stuck with it and did a great job. Everything was done precisely and worked out great for the overall film. It all looks wonderful when you watch the film. Definitely a great job done by Kamiya. The writer for this movie is Shotaro Suga, who was a co-writer for the popular videogame, "Devil May Cry 4," as well as a writer for 12 episodes of the anime Television show, "Blood+." In this movie Shotaro Suga's writing abilities are definitely at a high. He creates an awesome and original story for an adaptation from an awesome game. I like how he took the story in the future, away from the Umbrella Corp., even though I kind of missed the devious Corporation's involvement in the series. LOLZ! The Director and the Writer both do a really great job of working together on this movie, and bringing us a great CGI movie to watch, as well as an awesome new "Resident Evil" movie to add to our shelves! LOLZ!
The visuals for this movie are spectacular. Sometimes movies that are done in CGI can look a tad campy. I mean, look at the movie "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" (Which I thought was a good movie, by the way). It had CGI for the whole movie, but it lacked overall in feel, and the CGI technique was blocky, and looked a bit more like a Saturday Morning Cartoon one would find on Cartoon Network or FOX as they run their programs for the Children. Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed that movie, but I'm using it to state a point, and that point is that some movies look campy and cheesy with their CGI effects, whereas this movie (Much like the movie "Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children") does a great job with it's CGI look. It really brought the feel of the games into the movie, too, if you ask me. I mean, the looks of the movie along with the music score and the way the characters acted and the zombies acted, it was like watching someone else, an INVISIBLE someone else that is, playing the game. It was intense, and I thought it was great to watch. The zombies for this one looked pretty much exactly the videogame zombies and they did a great job of getting that down. Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield BOTH looked like the characters from the videogames, which is GREAT. Leon is wearing the same thing he had in the videogame "Resident Evil 4," and Claire still looks like herself, only wearing new clothing. Another cool visual that I enjoyed in this movie, was when Leon and Claire both had Flashbacks to the Raccoon City Incident, and they both FELT like the Game was. It's hard to explain, but there was a subtle difference between the movie feel, and the feel of those flashbacks. The movie overall felt like all of the games combined, whereas the flashbacks felt particularly JUST like "Resident Evil 2," the videogame felt. It was awesome. I also liked the monstrous appearance of the G-Virus mutation. It was awesome, creepy, and slightly reminiscent of Doctor William Birkin's mutated appearance from "Resident Evil 2" the videogame. I really enjoyed all of the visuals for this movie, they really added to the suspenseful and videogame-like feel of the whole movie. The visuals department of this movie were definitely a great/wonderful part of it, and were completely and very well done! LOLZ!
The storyline for this movie is absolutely great. What I REALLY liked about this movie was that it wasn't just an interpretation of the game into movie form, and it wasn't just a play-by-play of one of the games, rather it was an interpretation of what the games could lead into, and it does a great job of all of that. It's intriguing completely because of how this one thrusts the series into the future, and toys around with the idea of what could happen if the Umbrella Corporation ACTUALLY DID lose, instead of being the all-dominating figure of evil that it represents in the games. I'll admit that I did miss the Umbrella Corporation's presence in the whole movie, but believe me, it was all still there as the plot unfolds more and more, and more stuff is revealed to you. Another part of the story that I liked, which I mentioned earlier on in this review, was the fact that it reunited Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield. The two made an awesome tag team in the videogame, "Resident Evil 2" as they took on zombies in the town of Raccoon City, and it was great to see them working together against the T-Virus again. I like also how it pretty much kept them the same way. The last we'd heard from Leon he was working for the Government, as a specialty officer on the T-Virus, taking care of incidents and getting to the bottom of everything. It was great to see that they kept all of that. So anyway, the storyline of this one is great in many different ways, and really makes the movie what it is. It's seven years after the Raccoon City Incident, and the Umbrella Corporation has finally been brought down. However, as Claire Redfield is waiting for a ride after unboarding a plane, an outbreak of the T-Virus infectees occurs, and suddenly Claire is thrust back into the world of the undead after she'd thought she'd finally escaped. Soon she unexpectedly meets up with an old friend, and they, together with an S.R.T. (Special Response Team) member, uncover a huge plot that could affect the entire world. It's a great story and you're pretty much gripped from the beginning by what seems like non-stop action. It's a great story, and you NEVER lose your interest at all. At least, I didn't. lolz! It was a great storyline for a great movie. Definitely a keeper in the storyline department! LOLZ!
Alyson Court voices the character of Claire Redfield, like she has since Claire's first appearance in "Resident Evil 2." That's right, she's been Claire since Claire was invented for the games! LOLZ! Claire Redfield is unboarding a plane and meeting friends whom she hasn't seen in a long time when our movie begins. She is working with a group of protesters called "TerraSave" who are protesting the pharmaceutical company called "WilPharma," who have taken it upon themselves to conduct biological research. After a bad outbreak of the T-Virus in India, everyone is starting to boycott them. Claire is JUST starting to get over the Raccoon City incident when the SHIT LITERALLY hits the fan. As she reprimands a fellow protester for going too far by dressing as a zombie and pretending to attack the Senator whose behind all of this WilPharma bullshit, a REAL zombie attacks the officer who is taking the zombie FAKE into custody. Soon, that officer is infected and attacks a member of the Senator's guard, and soon the epidemic is spreading, and the zombies are killing the people in the terminal. The strange thing is, though, that Claire sees a doctor, Doctor Curtis Miller to be exact, leaving the terminal. This doctor has been giving WilPharma a bad name for a while, and was recently fired. She doesn't have long to ponder his sudden appearance, however because soon a plane crashes into the terminal, and hundreds more of the infected people spill into the terminal and cause chaos. As she and a few others fight and try to live through the infected hordes, Claire runs into the last person on Earth whom she expects to see, Leon S. Kennedy. Her and Leon help the Senator and other present company to fight their way to freedom. Soon after, Claire meets a man named Frederick Downing, and she's exposed to the truth about WilPharma, that they aren't what they seem, but soon, everything changes as a man whose past is rooted deep into Raccoon along with Claire and Leon, fights his way into the headquarters, and causes chaos for the company. Alyson Court was a great voice casting choice for Claire in this movie for a number of reasons. The first being that she was the one who was chosen to play Claire in all of the videogames that Claire was in, so it's great to keep voice continuity up, but also because her voice really adds to what this character is SUPPOSED TO be. She gives depth, feeling, emotion, worry, and determination to the character, and that's EXACTLY how Claire is supposed to be voiced. It works out great, and Alyson Court really does well at playing the character. The voice adds to the character, and you can really feel for the character since she is thrust back into a world that she had thought, HOPED, that she had escaped seven years ago, though I'm not too sure if TONS of people can relate to that. Alyson Court was DEFINITELY a great casting choice to voice this role.
Leon S. Kennedy is voiced by the same actor who voiced Leon S. Kennedy in the recent "Resident Evil" game, "Resident Evil 4," and that man would be Paul Mercier, who has done a lot of videogame voices, including a character called "Uruk Hai" in "The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth" and "The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth II." Leon S. Kennedy is another survivor of Raccoon City, except, unlike his friend Claire Redfield, Leon went on to FIGHT Umbrella Corporation and it's evil mutagenic T-Virus, whereas Claire protested the virus, and tried to save EVERYONE the trouble of having to deal with the virus. After seven years, Leon has joined a government group and is, as I said, working on wiping out the virus all over the place. Soon word reaches him of an incident where the T-Virus was released in an airport, and Leon is sent to check it out and aid the officials in containing the virus, and saving any potential survivors. As he is working on this job, he runs into one of the survivors and is surprised to find that it is his old friend, Claire Redfield. Soon they escape the building, and only lose one of their team, an S.R.T. (Special Rescue Team), to the horde of Zombies. Leon, however, finds that he is not completely done hear in this small town. He soon finds himself in love with another S.R.T., this one's name is Angela Miller, and she seems to have a lot more to her than meets the eye as her past is revealed, and it is known that a member of her family is causing all of this trouble. Soon, Leon relates the story of why he is REALLY there, and all about the threats that General Grande has been making about the T-Virus, and how he wants the truth about the Raccoon City Incident revealed before midnight, or he will release the T-Virus into every majorly populated city in the United States, and cause the evil disease to destroy everything in it's path, like it did as it spread through the streets of Raccoon City. Now Leon, Angela, and Claire must work together to stop this new threat to WilPharma and their TRUE works, before it can cause any SERIOUS damage to everything. Paul Mercier does a great/wonderful job at voicing this character, and really brings Leon S. Kennedy to life, just like he did in the "Resident Evil 4" game. He portrays all of the things that Leon S. Kennedy is supposed to be: determinate, strong-willed, passionate, and fierce in his hatred for the Umbrella Corporation and their evil, vile and disgusting virus, called the T-Virus. Paul Mercier really does great, as I said, and makes the character one that you can feel for, since he's so determined to do everything he can, but it doesn't seem like he'll be able to get anywhere before the deadline is reached without compliance, and the United States is in trouble, and it's also one that you could relate to for very similar reasons. Paul Mercier was DEFINITELY another great voice casting choice for this movie.
Laura Bailey, who has been in A LOT of Anime movies, including one of the "Hellsing"'s as well as a lot of different "Dragonball Z" movies, stars in this movie as the voice of Angela Miller, a member of the S.R.T. (Special Response Team.). Angela Miller is a strong woman, and she also feels obligated to save anyone she can, no matter what. That is why at the beginning of the movie, when the character is first introduced, she is flipping out at her chief because he will not allow her to go into the airport to answer a 911 call that was received from some survivors who had wholed themselves up in the VIP lounge. She is informed that there is a "Special Agent" headed their way to help them with things. When he finally arrives, it is easily told that he is not what she, and her friend/partner, Greg (Voiced by Steve Blum, whose been in TONS of CGI Animated films, INCLUDING "Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children," where he played Vincent Valentine, my favorite "Final Fantasy" character EVER! LOLZ!), had expected. They ask what they should do, and Leon informs them that it will be just him and the two of them, to prevent further infection. When Angela trusts him, and follows his lead, she is not disappointed, as they rescue the people, though, much to her dismay, Greg is lost to the zombie horde. Soon, though, it seems something bigger is happening, and it is revolving around Angela's older brother, Curtis Miller, the doctor from WilPharma that was let go, whom she hasn't seen for almost/over three years. She finds out that he is the one causing all of this trouble, and now she strives to stop him, though she has a feeling that she knows WHY her brother, Curtis, is doing this. She fights on, though some question her, but never try to stop her. Soon, she finds herself working with Leon again, and she finds that she has fallen in love with this rough-and-tough "Special Agent" named "Leon S. Kennedy." Laura Bailey does a great job as the voice of this new-to-"Resident Evil" character, Angela Miller. She really has the depth, emotion, worry, feeling, and strong will that make up the character that Angela Miller is supposed to be, as well as her determination, and love that goes behind everything she does. She makes Angela like the character, I'm sure, was intended to be, and that is a driven, self-reliant, and strong person. She definitely knows how to voice a character, and she DEFINITELY knew how to voice this one. She makes the character as it should be, and it really adds to the momentum of the story, as well, even, to the suspense in the moments where Angela Miller has to consult with herself to overcome something she doesn't particularly agree with. She really voices Angela Miller VERY well, and makes it a character that you can even FEEL FOR, since she just lost one of her closest friends and allies, and now she's got to go after her older brother because he is causing trouble, and it is trouble that could endanger the whole entire world, though I'm not sure that this is a character that you could relate to, either. LOLZ! Laura Bailey was DEFINITELY yet another great voice casting choice for this movie.
Roger Craig Smith (Who will be voicing the character, Chris Redfield, Claire Redfield's older brother, in the upcoming videogame "BioHazard 5," also known as "Resident Evil 5." LOLZ!) plays the voice of the conflicted bad guy, and Angela Miller's brother, Curtis Miller, in this movie. Curtis Miller was once a proud man, a researcher, or scientist of some kind, until the Umbrella Corporation's evil atrocities caused him and his family so much pain. He had moved to Raccoon City, and raised a family their, a wife and a daughter, but soon the city was rampant with the T-Virus infectees, and he and his family had to run for cover, and save themselves. However, his wife and daughter did not make it out of the city alive, and Curtis Miller was left alone to think to himself. He did get a job, however, at the WilPharma company, as a researcher and such. Soon, though, Curtis Miller is driven mad by what has happened, and he grows bitter at the cover-up that is being used to hide Raccoon City, and when he discovers what WilPharma is hiding inside of it's company, he finds the perfect chance to gain his revenge against the evil Umbrella Corporation, and all those who covered up the atrocious incident at Raccoon City. This revenge is not going to come at a cheap price, though, and it is going to cost him his life. He does not care, though. All he wants to do is bring the companies and the elected officials who decided to bomb Raccoon City and not leave any evidence of the T-Virus incident into the open, and expose them to the public, so that the public can learn the true story and fight the disease and the people, and hopefully bring an end to all of this. The only pain in Curtis Miller's side, would be his sister, Angela Miller, and her persistent friends, Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield, who try to get to him to stop him before anything rash can be done. However, they don't understand the importance of Curtis' mission, and so he pushes on, dodging them swiftly when he has to, though it doesn't SEEM like that in the movie, since he is usually LONG gone, LONG before anyone shows up. LOLZ! Roger Craig Smith does an excellent job voicing this character. It's a mysterious and slightly creepy voice, but it adds a nice effect to what the character of Curtis Miller is supposed to be, and that is something that really helps the movie along. Roger Craig Smith's voiceover does excellently capturing the essence of the character in his voice. It's a character that is strong, good-hearted, and a nice guy, but also one that has been driven to the edge, and he is sick of being lied to and pushed around, and nothing is going to stop him from revealing everything that needs to be done to make sure that he is NOT pushed around ANYMORE. Roger Craig Smith adds all of this together into Curtis Miller, by just using his voice, and it is a great effect. He really was an expert at voicing this character. He makes it a character that you can even feel for, since he is just SO on edge and sick of everything, so he goes about getting his revenge, and he takes and uses the most brash and blatant way possible, and I don't know if this is a character that you can exactly RELATE TO, but I DEFINITELY know that this is a character that you can REALLY FEEL FOR. Roger Craig Smith was DEFINITELY ANOTHER great voice casting choices for this role.
All in all this was an excellent and awesome new "Resident Evil" movie, and one that fans of "Resident Evil," be it the movies, the books, or the videogames, will DEFINITELY love and enjoy, and I know that they will have a blast watching this and remembering the videogames. It's a fresh new film, and it's one whose end DEFINITELY says there will be a sequel, which is something that I cannot wait for at all! The directing on this movie is done by a CGI Director who DEFINITELY knows what he is doing, and he DEFINITELY knows how to create an awesome and suspenseful CGI movie, that is for DAMN SURE! LOLZ! This movie's directing was done spectacularly. The writing for this movie was also done incredibly well, and by someone who really knew what it was that they were doing. They wove a new and original storyline into an awesome suspense series, and it REALLY worked out well. The visuals for this movie are all done in CGI, but it is over-the-top, and all of it is amazing to watch. It's a great movie visually, and it will DEFINITELY help to keep your eyes glued to the screen as all of the awesomeness unfolds in awesome visual sequences. the storyline is one of epic proportions, and REALLY adds to the whole "Resident Evil" storyline. It's a great one that fans of the movies, the books, and even the videogames will love. It brings it into the future, and it does it nicely, adding a new twist along the way to the ownership of the T-Virus, and how close it is to being completely stopped. It's a great storyline, and it is one that will DEFINITELY keep you glued to the screen for the entire movie. The acting, or VOICE-acting in this movie, is what keeps everything together nicely. All of the voice-actors do a great job of bringing life to their characters in their own respective ways, and really add to the characters, making them all VERY good characters, and ones that you can even FEEL FOR, and in SOME instances RELATE TO. This really was an excellent movie, and if you liked movies like "Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children" and "Star Wars: The Clone Wars," and/or are a fan of the "Resident Evil" franchise, be it movies, books, or videogames, then this is DEFINITELY the movie for you to see. It's a great and epic CGI Animation experience that you should definitely NOT miss for anything! It's really THAT awesome! I know I loved it, and I also know that if you give this movie the chance, then you'll love it, too! Of that I am sure!
LOLZ!

LOLZ!

could have been better
Thanks about the review, too, by the way. :)
I have not seen "Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children" (The 2nd of the CG film series -- correct?), but I have seen the first FF film and thought it was great. I have never been into the RE games but I enjoy the movies with a passion. Especially the mythological elements surrounding the Umbrella Corp., the Alice clones, and how Alice is now "the Hybrid" (mix of T-Virus DNA). I have a feint idea of who Claire and Leon are, and get the picture that they are highly canon characters, which is cool, I think I have seen Claire in RE2 or RE3 (films) but I am extremely looking forward to the resolution to "RE: Extinction"'s ending. I am patiently awaiting "RE: Afterlife," but this will have to satisfy my thirst.
Thanks again for a wonderful review. I will be seeing this soon.
The way I heard it was that Paul W.S. Anderson started the series with the intention of a four part series, and nothing more. I hope that that is right. They'll make it, though. You can't have an ending like THAT and not do another. Besides, Milla will want to do another. Of that much I'm almost one hundred percent positive. lolz!
That's awesome VIS. In my boredom, I've begun to put together a castlist for "Resident Evil 4." lolz.
finally they did they're HW and stuck true to the series
the live-action trilogy is good but this is way better!
