2046: Review By MutantFairy

I admit I bought this DVD because I thought it was a sci-fi movie, but it isn't. It's a sequel to "in the mood for love" which turned out to be a great movie. Mr. Chow is a changed man after the events of that other movie. He goes out gambling all the time now & dates woman after woman. It's easy for him because he uses his innate nice guy tendencies with his new hardened heart to seduce women. The problem is that he is still living in the past, hurt by what happened. He can't really move on. When women actually do fall for him, he can't reciprocate.

He writes a sci-f story that we see in the movie but that's one of many small love stories in the film. The other love stories involve the man he has turned into. He is now an unfeeling man or rather he tries to be. He isn't really but he tries his best to suppress his feelings. At the end you feel for him but during the film, you can't help but feel for the women in his new life. This time you feel sorry more for the women he hurts in this movie than you do for him.

It's another great film with great costumes & performances especially Zhang Ziyi. Holding back tears, her character asks something that everyone who has been heartbroken asks: "Why can't it be like it was before?"
