Actor Michael Keaton has signed on to direct his second feature with the dramatic comedy Buttercup. He made his directorial debut with the 2009 indie The Merry Gentleman.

The story centers on a woman who is forced to take care of her elderly father, after he is arrested yet again for drunken driving. She comes to terms with his issues, and slowly begins to trust the other men in her life. The title refers to her childhood nickname. The multi-hyphenate replaces Niki Caro at the helm. Jennifer Aniston and Alan Arkin were previously attached to star, although they are no longer involved, with casting currently under way.

Alice O'Neil wrote the screenplay, with Michael London producing through his Groundswell Pictures company, alongside Brian Koppelman and David Levien. No production schedule was given.

We reported last week that the actor joined the cast of MGM's RoboCop remake.
