Actress Ming-Na has signed on to star as Agent Melinda May in the ABC superhero series Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D.. This character was listed as Agent Althea Rice a.k.a. The Calvary in the character breakdowns from last month.

The character is described as a pilot, weapons expert, and soldier who often goes far above and beyond the call of duty. She is soft-spoken and slightly damaged from her experiences in combat. She joins Clark Gregg in the cast, who we reported earlier this month is returning as Agent Coulson from Marvel's The Avengers.

Joss Whedon is writing the pilot script with Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. He will likely direct the first episode, if his schedule permits. The writers will also serve as executive producers along with Jeph Loeb and Jeffrey Bell.

Ming-Na is best known for her roles on ER, Stargate Universe, and an arc on Eureka. She also voiced the title role in Disney's Mulan.
