Man of Steel 2 is considering Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling to play Batman
Just days after our report that Man of Steel 2 is seeking an actor in his late 30s or early 40s to play Batman, we have a list of potential candidates to play The Dark Knight in this highly-anticipated superhero sequel.

Gangster Squad star Josh Brolin (46) is reportedly the top candidate to play Batman, although studio sources say that the casting process has not even begun yet. Other contenders include Ryan Gosling, the youngest on the list at 32 years of age, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey star Richard Armitage (41), Joe Manganiello (36), Max Martini (43), and Matthew Goode (35).

Some insiders say that any casting talk is premature, since the script is still being written by David S. Goyer. We reported last week that director Zack Snyder was meeting with Frank Miller to discuss the Batman elements of this sequel, although it isn't known if he is being brought on as a producer or writer at this time.

Production is slated to begin in early 2014, for a summer 2015 release.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice comes to theaters March 25th, 2016 and stars Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Gal Gadot, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeremy Irons. The film is directed by Zack Snyder.

@jasonkat I hear ya, and agree with you on BATMAN BEGINS having a better take the previous BATMAN films. I didn't know what to think of it when I first saw the trailers, because it did seem so different, but I was excited because it was a new BATMAN movie and it had to be better than Schumacher's films for sure. And then it blew me away and was defiantly my favorite BATMAN film at that time.

I'm not sure if it will take place in Gotham City, I would love at least some of it to take place there, but I'm guessing the majority of it will be in Metropolis. I'm wondering if they are going to do a flash back kind of thing to show Bruce Wayne's past or if they will just leave that for a stand alone new BATMAN film? I know they don't really need to show how Bruce Wayne became Batman, we all know by now, but I'm thinking they will show a little something just for story sake.

I meant to say "...due to what has happened to Metropolis"

Plus this could eventually set up a Batman Beyond movie later down the line where Bruce Wayne is against passing on the Mask but learns that Terry has it in him to be the Batman but this time around Bruce sticks around to properly train him as Batman

They could so make Christian Bales Batman work in this world, listen to my idea. SPOILERS BEWARE.....................

In the end of the TDKR we see Bruce Wayne as an older Batman who has retired and mask and lifestyle of Batman and has passed it on to John Blake. Well why not start it out like this, Christian Bales Batman watching the news or reading a paper or something along those lines with a front page story of Batman being killed in Gotham and the identity of John Blake being released. At this point we would see Bruce Wayne and see a mistake that he had made by passing it on without properly training John Blake which would create this sense of Blame in Bruce, Bruce Wayne then considers coming back and becoming Batman one again leaving Selena Kyle AKA Catwoman which would create a sort of rivalry to which could explain why Catwoman is good and bad especially towards Batman. Now the reasoning to John Blakes Batmans death would be the problem of a super powered being which would be the first introduced into Christian Bales Batman universe, so as Christian Bales Batman comes back to Gotham and Alfred is there by his side again and see why Bruce is going back to his ways he creates other technologies to help him fight these super powered beings. Now the super powered being that could've killed John Blakes Batman could be a minor cameo sort of like Croc or Solomon Grundy where Christian Bales Batman comes back and "defeats him" and everyone sees that Batman is back. After the Bruce Wayne returns to Gotham and "defeats" this super powered being he learns of another super powered being known as Superman who recently came into the light and Bruce sees this man as a threat due to what has happened to Gotham. Bruce then sets out to find this man and defeat him. Now that's all i'm going to say as far as making the Christian Bale Batman work in the universe which i think is what A lot of people INCLUDING myself wants, we do not need another Batman, we need The Dark Knight.

@2movieguys Well, It would be one of the other that they would cast. Josh Brolin would really be the better option for the role as Batman in my opinion.

@redcameraman If Jensen Ackles doesn't get picked to star In Man of Steel 2 as Batman, then Josh Brolin would be the next best choice to star in it as Batman.

They're looking for a mid 30's early 40's actor to play Bruce Wayne from what I understand; so they're going with someone will fit the mold of a more experienced and older Batman. They'll most likely borrow elements from several sources involving Batman and Superman. I'd say Public Enemies, and The World's Finest with a little bit of The Dark Knight Returns.

Yeah, it may be too soon. Or they may just be changing it up a bit. Taking from Public Enemies, The World's Finest, and The Dark Knight Returns. I hope they include the Joker; and if not an older Bruce Wayne all the other things you and I agree on. And, hell I wouldn't even mind if Snyder did the Yellow Emblem on the damn Bat Suit. I trust Snyder; he's a damn great filmmaker. I know whatever he and Goyer, and Nolan have planned; the new Batman/Superman film is going to be gloriously epic and awesome. No doubt. I didn't think they'd do it so soon, and now I'm thrilled. 2015 is not far away at all. But, they need to get their marketing right, and go ahead and choose their next Batman. Karl Urban, Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling; it doesn't matter. They may already have em signed. Whoever it is, I know Snyder and Co. and whoever plays the character will do it justice. They'll definitely fit together in the same world; Goyer's one of the best screenwriters around, and Snyder and Nolan will mesh the two characters. Nolan will have very little input as Exec. Producer; but he will have input. And, those three guys are film wizards. It'll work just fine.

@brandon-scott-todd The only thing I fear is that it is too soon for a Dark Knight Returns sort of Batman when we've just established who Superman is. Fit him in as a vet but not one on his last legs if you know what I mean. He still has to establish a bonding relationship with Clark to ever really move toward a Justice League movie.

No more Bale. I want someone who is calm and collected like Keaton was, but it be awesome to have the gritty comic version of Batman on the big screen; an Older, more Brutal, more experienced Batman. Like that in The Dark Knight Returns Graphic Novel.

  12. Brandon S. Todd

@Mieko_Siede Yes, exactly. The grey suited, white eyed, top tier martial artist, strategist, and tactician and the smartest man on earth just about...who knows everybody's weaknesses before they do; and is always a step ahead of his enemies. Christopher Nolan's Batman films were awesome, and I enjoyed Batman in those movies but it was somewhat to realistic. Focusing more on Bruce Wayne as Batman; rather than the Persona of Batman. Bruce Wayne is a schizo basically. And, the World's Greatest Detective. I want to see that Batman. You get exactly what I'm saying; in the Man of Steel universe, only the pseudo-Superhuman Batman will work. They gotta do the Grey Suit, White Lens', and Extra Long Cape...with the Calm and Collected voice, gadgets out the ying yang, and a Batman that's as Brutal as he is Collected.

@brandon-scott-todd I understand what you're saying and trust me I want a dynamic Batman as well. I do believe Snyder based on his style as a director and given the right person to fit the role can bring that element to the character on screen. However, even in Frank Millers iteration of Batman he is still just a man that uses his cunning as a weapon as well as brutish strength. He's not superhuman by any form of the word. He was a man that knew Superman's weakness and the fortitude to successfully use it against him. If you recall, he had a suit lined with the radiation of kryptonite to even the field when they were in a position to throw hands. He never bested Superman with his strength alone and he quite often admitted that to himself that he never could. He used a man's weakness against him.

That's not to say that I don't understand what you mean. Batman in film is not quite as "animated" as he is in any other medium. We have yet to see the slick and agile Batman. The acrobatic Batman. The Batman with the lethal skills of a ninja and the grace of a ballerina. The stealthy and cunning Dark Detective. I get that. I've said before on one of these threads that I would love to see Batman in charcoal grey suit tailored to his body made of some kind of kevlar mesh. A cape and hood of a light but leathery fabric. Lenses for eyes to hide his. And a utility belt with practical yet fanciful devices. I'd love to see that portrayed in a way similar to how Steve Carolla had done with his short, Batman: Dead End. That would be awesome. And honestly, to effectively fit in a world created for Man of Steel, it almost has to be that way. You have a godly being that hovers and flies. They would have to pull off an equally as fantastic mortal. And they would have to focus more on the alter ego of Batman versus the identity of Bruce Wayne to effectively maintain the interest of watchers who want to be engaged. Oh trust me, I know what you're saying.

.... Just my opinion, but why not Matt Damon?... He could pull of the physical as we have seen from the likes of Borne movies. And he can also do the awkward suit thing like Elysium has shown. Truth is, I even thought about Ben Affleck, but I keep thinking DD, and how bad it looked...

All of these rumored actors being the top candidate to play Batman are all FALSE. Many artist have been making fan made posters which are awesome by the way (1. 3. of these actors to play Batman so that's how these rumors got started.

Now hypothetically spoken if this were true, in my opinion mostly none of these actors would be in my line up to dawn the cape.

Josh Brolin is way too old, and if you consider it from a business perspective they probably are going to spin this Batman back into his own series so in the long run it wouldn't be smart.

Ryan Gosling would make for a good superhero just not Batman, plus he's taking a break from acting to direct.

Richard Armitage is a decent choice, but considering he was in Captain America he meant not be able to take on the role if chosen due to Marvel having a tight grip around actors who star in there movies.

For those who don't know Joe Manganiello was actually second in line to play Superman behind Henry Cavil so it would interesting for WB to cast him as Batman even if I'm hoping (fingers crossed) he will someday be cast as the Big Red Cheese (high five to those who know the superhero I'm talking about).

Max is a decent actor, I liked him in Revenge but can't see him as Batman.

Matthew Goode has already played a similar character in Watchmen as Adrian Veidt/ Ozymandias, plus I highly doubt DC would be that stupid to rehire a man who told fans to wait in a line and suck his you know what :(.

@ Mieko I simply want to see the Batman, Frank Millers Batman who is the Shadows. An unrealistic, superhuman Batman who is capable of taking out 20 guys in one fell swoop. With myriad gadgets. And, Darkness as his ally. The Batman who is capable of beating Superman. With the White Eyes, Long Cape hanging over the Shoulders...I want to see The Batman. Not the man. The Superhero. Nolan gave us the man, and did the character study thing. I want to see The Batman; however unrealistic, I think Snyder will provide the Superhuman Batman from the comics as compared to the beat down, pitiful, and desolate Batman who was broken after a year and a half of fighting in Nolan's BB and TDK; and then in the Third Film acts as if he doesn't know how to use a damn gadget and spends time dousing buildings in Gasonline while fighting with terrible choreography.

Don't get me wrong. The Dark Knight Trilogy is one of my favorites, and one of the best in general. But, I'm ready to see a new take on the character of Batman. @CoreyB I get your point. I understand what you're saying; and I may be alone in my view, but as I said Bale's Bruce Wayne was grade A, while his Batman in some moments was simply awkward and not the strategist, superhuman with gadgets upon gadgets. I loved Chris Nolan's Batman films, but I want to see the extreme version of Batman. The Batman who can beat the living Hell out of Superman. Frank Millers Batman.
