Joel and Ethan Coen to ReWrite Angelina Jolie's 'Unbroken'

This World War II drama centers on Lou Zamperini, who survived a horrific plane crash only to be captured by the Japanese Navy.

Joel and Ethan Coen have inked a deal to re-write Angelina Jolie's WWII drama Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption.

The film is an adaptation of a book written by Laura Hillenbrand and centers on the life of Olympian and war hero Louis Zamperini. The story follows the war hero and two of his crewman as they survive a horrific plane crash and end up captured by the Japanese Navy. The film will chronicle their time in a concentration camp and his time as a member of the 1936 US Olympic team in Berlin.

Francis Lawrence was originally attached to director the project, but it has since been taken over by Angelina Jolie. Matthew Baer, Erwin Stoff and Mick Garris are producing.

Joel and Ethan Coen most recently wrote and directed their own drama Inside Llewyn Davis for CBS films and penned a script for Michael Hoffman's Gambit.

No production schedule has been released.

Unbroken comes to theaters December 25th, 2014 and stars Jack O'Connell, Domhnall Gleeson, Finn Wittrock, Garrett Hedlund, Jai Courtney. The film is directed by Francis Lawrence.
