Jedi or Sith? Is Benedict Cumberbatch Joining ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’?

If the unconfirmed report is proven to be true, the actor will reunite with his ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ director J.J. Abrams.

As we continue to wait impatiently for any official casting details regarding Star Wars: Episode VII, rumors are the best we have for now. Today, an unconfirmed report has surfaced revealing that Star Trek Into Darkness star Benedict Cumberbatch has been cast in this highly-anticipated sequel.

There are no details on who the actor may portray, but, as you can see in this interview with Total Film from earlier this year, the actor joked about asking director J.J. Abrams if he could play a lightsaber in the movie.

"I've already asked him if I can be a lightsaber and we're in talks - about whirring sounds and the rates for the lights and everything [laughs]. I thought, 'Yeah, I grew up with them,' and I just looked recently at when they were released and now I'm like, 'No, I didn't grow up with them, I was born with them.' They were a huge part of my background, and my upbringing. I was much more connected to [Star Wars] as a kid, in the way that a lot of kids are because it's immediate storytelling, very simple - a beautifully, outrageously simple narrative in a way - and a wonderful three-act melodrama, opera. And I loved them. I really, really loved those films and I always wanted to be Han Solo. Everything Harrison Ford did I just thought was the coolest thing ever."

We reported last month that Benedict Cumberbatch dropped out of Guillermo del Toro's Crimson Peak, although no reason was given for his departure. Could he have left that project to take on a mysterious role in Star Wars: Episode VII? Would you like to see the actor as a Jedi or a Sith in the new movie? Only time will tell.

J.J. Abrams is directing from a screenplay by Michael Arndt. We reported last week that production is scheduled to begin next January at Pinewood Studios in London.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens comes to theaters December 18th, 2015 and stars John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson. The film is directed by J.J. Abrams.

Wouldn't be awesome to see C*mberbatch begin his Sith trail of destruction with the decapitation of Han as he seeks out Leia's Jedi twins !!?! Yes. Yes it would.

Why him? Yes he's awesome but he can't be in both JJ's films. Trek and Wars for this actor is too much, either do one or the other, not both.
I would like to see Benedict as Batman/ Wayne

Even though I think he would be great as a Sith/Villain, I hope he plays a Jedi/Good guy cause I dont want him being type casted in movies only as a villain

There can only be 2 Sith. So if they plan on bringing the emperor back is this the main villain?

The guy definitely has the kind of facial structure that would fit well in the Star Wars as well as the acting chops to back it all up. If there was one actor who could cross over from JJ's Trek series, it would be C*mberbatch (unless they also casted Chris Pine as a young Han Solo at some point, which I could actually see happening).
