James Cameron Is Nearly Done Writing ‘Avatar 2’ and ‘Avatar 3’

Actress Zoe Saldana reveals that the writer-director is trying to remove himself from distractions so he can finish the screenplay.

After confirming that Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 will be shot back-to-back next year, actress Zoe Saldana offered another update on the Pandora-set sequels, revealing that James Cameron is almost done with the screenplays. Here's what the actress had to say, revealing the filmmaker is trying to distance himself from distractions.

"We've emailed, but I know that he's sort of been removing himself from things that might distract him so that he can focus on doing the final tweaks on the scripts. He did share that he's in a very interesting and fragile place, because the story is dictating itself. You walk a fine line when you're the creator of the story you're going to tell, of the manipulation that you may have unconsciously of the story and the characters versus allowing the story to unfold it, because you did create such a monumental and solid platform that they're just living and breathing organisms and they're the ones that need to make their own decisions. I'm geek talking right now, but that's how intense it affects me and how I feel about amazing storytellers like James Cameron, like J.J. Abrams. They create things that are real out of unimaginable scenarios, and that is beautiful to me."

We reported in March that the writer-director was still working on the scripts, and that both sequels do not have release dates set in stone yet. It was initially believed that Avatar 2 will hit theaters in December 2014, and Avatar 3 will debut in December 2015. Since production will not get under way until early 2014, it seems Avatar 2 may be ready for a December 2015 release, with Avatar 3 arriving in December 2016.

Avatar 2 comes to theaters November 2017 and stars Stephen Lang, Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington. The film is directed by James Cameron.

Avatar 3 comes to theaters November 2018 and stars Stephen Lang, Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington. The film is directed by James Cameron.

Hope it's as ground-breaking at the original. There was rumor that Weaver will be back somehow. I really want to see that. Hope all the original cast is in it.

@dan1 I agree. She's no Meryl Streep, but she's always immersed herself in her characters, both physically and mentally.

@themoviefanatic Yeah, he wrote it in the mid 90s, but he didn't even consider shooting it back then because the technology for what he wanted to do was still years away. Actual production on the film started in 2005 I believe, which is when they started working on the cameras, motion capture, refining the script, concept art, etc.

@felipe-11 Well the reason I said that is because if I remember correctly, the making the first Avatar movie took several years. Wasn't it revealed once that James Cameron had been working on the script for Avatar since like the 1980s or since the 1990s ?

I really hated the first one and see no point in making a sequel... let alone 2... Oh wait it made money.. silly me.. F*cking Hollywood..

@themoviefanatic The first one took so long to make because they had to develop their own 3D cameras, improve their motion capture technology, and convince Fox that they could make back their super high budget.

Now they have none of those problems, the only focus right now is on the script. And how is this rushed? Avatar 1 came out in 2009 and this one will come out at least 5 years later (there's still no OFFICIAL release date).

I thought that it would take James Cameron much longer to write Avatar 2 and Avatar 3's scripts. But i guess that happens to not be the case. I think James Cameron should hold off on the Avatar sequels, because it took him much longer to make Avatar(the first avatar movie). It is not a good thing to rush the making of a movie.

@ejk1 Explain me that, please! What you mean, that James steal ideas from other directors? tell me more about that...give me one or two times when he did this,I want really know, because I did not like him so much.

"James Cameron is nearly done writing Avatar 2 and 3."

Translation: James Cameron has watched enough other films and decided which films James Cameron wants to copy. Because that's what James Cameron does.

I love Saldana. She's the reigning scifi queen, and a true geek. Even if she isn't the best actress, the fact that she puts herself through blue or green transformations and leaps from franchise to franchise warrants respect from anyone.
