Just one day after we reported that Independence Day star Vivica A. Fox will return for Independence Day 2, Boardwalk Empire actor Travis Tope is in negotiations to join the cast. The actor will play a character named Charlie, although no further details were given. Independence Day star Will Smith is not returning, although Bill Pullman (Thomas Whitmore) and Jeff Goldblum (David Levinson) are reprising their roles from the original, alongside Vivica A. Fox.

The new cast members coming on board for the sequel include Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher and Charlotte Gainsbourg. When Jessie Usher was originally cast, it was revealed that he is playing the son of Will Smith's Stephen Hiller. However, The Wrap reports that he is actually playing Jasmine Dubrow's son Dylan, originally played by Ross Bagley in Independence Day. In the original movie, Hiller was dating Dubrow, but he was not the father of Dylan. The site also reports that Liam Hemsworth is playing the son-in-law of Bill Pullman's Thomas Whitmore.

Roland Emmerich is directing from a script that was most recently written by James A. Woods and Nicolas Wright. The director previously worked on an earlier draft with Dean Devlin, and James Vanderbilt also took a crack at the script as well. Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin are also producing alongside Harald Kloser, although it isn't known when production will begin.

Travis Tope is best known for playing Joe Harper, aka Slim (his real alias may be a spoiler to those who have not watched the series finale), in Season 5 of HBO's Boardwalk Empire, and he recently appeared on CBS' new series Battle Creek. On the big screen, he recently starred in Men, Women & Children and The Town That Dreaded Sundown. He will next be seen in the Blumhouse thriller Viral alongside Analeigh Tipton.
