Hugh Jackman Now Less Sure He Is Retiring as 'Wolverine'

The actor, who has played the mutant Wolverine in 7 X-Men movies, feels reinvigorated by the new franchise sequel.

Hugh Jackman has spent the better part of a year claiming he is ready to hang up his Adamantium claws as the mutant Wolverine in the X-Men franchise. Last he spoke on the subject, he boldly stated that he was 99.9% sure he is going to retire the Logan character after Wolverine 3, a movie he said he'd only sign on for if the script was right. At the beginning of the X-Men: Days of Future Past press tour, he made it clear that he was going to shoot Wolverine 3 and X-Men: Apocalypse back-to-back, which meant he was actually coming back for two more franchise sequels after hemming and hawing on the subject for months. Now, it sounds like he may be back for even more after that. While speaking at the Australian press junket, he reveals that he has reconsidered his previous statements.

Hugh Jackman was so impressed with X-Men: Days of Future Past after seeing it for the first time, he now seems less sure that he will give up the Wolverine character. It's unlikely that it will be passed to another actor anytime soon.

"At one point, you're right, I said I was pretty sure [that Wolverine 3 would be my last outing in the role]. But I'm less sure as it goes along. Because after seeing this movie, the whole thing feels fresher to me than ever. And during this movie...I don't want to spoil anything, but it's kind of like a clean slate, so who knows where it's going to go. As long as I have the passion for it and the fans will have me."

What do you think of his change of mind? Are you excited to see Hugh Jackman continue on as the popular mutant? Or were you ready to see him give the mantle over to someone else? If he keeps his word this time, its possible that Wolverine 3 will not be based on the Marvel series 'Old Man Logan'.

Wolverine 3 comes to theaters March 3rd, 2017 and stars Hugh Jackman. The film is directed by James Mangold.

If Hugh can change his mind so can RDJ, I would love to see them together in a film. Marvel or not.

Clean slate (cough origins, cough last stand) ....great news, but we all knew he couldnt turn this away, its him, its his baby, he is Logan he is The Wolverine!

Sean Connery was Bond for a long time as Roger Moore was. Maybe Hugh wants to continue because he enjoys the work and this film renewed his faith.
They focus on Logan too much, there isn't an i in team.
Thats why Joss Whedon would also be good for it as well.

It would be funny if 20 years from now Hugh is asked about why he really kept wanting to play Wolverine and his answer is "because otherwise I would slowly become a fat ass. I needed the role to ensure I would stay in shape."

So long as it feels like he is choosing to play the character out of passion and not for the money. And so long as his age doesnt catch up to him, i don't mind him being Logan.
Well maby let it catch up and then give us old man logan as a retirement pressent :D
All the talk about his height and such realy can't gt me going, if you want the comic book logan.. read a comic ;)

I guess it's cool for him to keep going. I really don't want Wolverine to die either, but I guess they have to kill off characters in the comics once in a while. That crap is worse than a daytime soap opera.

    @ObiWanShinobi, "...should've...", not "...should of..."

@Dfella504, I was got what you were saying until I read, "....wit da...."

@jasonkat, I agree about Robert Englund. And remember what happened to Jackie Earl Haley's Freddie? One movie. I wish I could say the same for the new Karate Kid.

awe crap, i guess it's not his fault that his hair is wrong, height is wrong, rage wrong, chops not long enough, and the killer in him is non exsistant.

All his past comments all he added such things as "how long could he go?", "People could get sick of him."; and "the studio may want someone new." Which the later being based on how studios have did characters like Spiderman and Fantastic Four.

what hes saying is... "i wanna be, i'm gonna be your "Wolverine" for as long as i can. or for as long as the fans want me to be. i wanna do what Robert Englund did with freddy after all those yrs. between now and then. i dont really know what my future holds for me but im gonna take it 1 step at a time, "Logan" is not hanging his claws up yet.

Not even! First Class pulled it off perfectly. If anything thats how the movies should of been borned. Hollywood has you brainwashed mate. Matthew Vaughn knew what he was doing with X-Men First Class, he was an avid xm comic reader like I am. @shuabert

The problem isn't so much of Hugh Jackman. It's how EVERY X-Men film, minus First Class, revolves around him. Maybe with a new guy as Wolverine, someone will make it more of a team movie rather than a "We're the X-Men, but no one can write a decent script without Wolverine being the main protagonist so really it's the Hugh Jackman show" lol

I say it's time to retire it Hugh. By the time Wolverine 3's released that will have been nearly 20 years of playing the same character on the silver screen. I say pass the mantle, and cast a shorter actor as Wolvie so it can resemble the comics more. Not that I didn't appreciate your portrayal of Logan, I just want to him potrayed the way he is in the comics. I just wanna see the short, grizzly Wolverine in that classic yellow suit on the big screen before i die. Similar to the First Class costumes.

What he's really saying is ''as long as the films still bring home a mountain of money at the box office i'm in for the ride'', said that i'm happy he's deciding to stay but that statement he made was quite inconsistent
