I know they have been out quite a while, but I haven't come across a post on this.

Although I realize that Ringu was taken directly from the book [ which I haven't read, if it has even been translated yet ], and respect that fact, I think I personally prefer the American version.

They were very similar, in both the style, camera work and storyline. The American version kept respectfully close to the original, although I really liked the additional footage on the video tape present in the western version [ the ladder, the fly, horses on the beach, ect. ] . I also felt that much more was revealed about the girl in this version, as well as her family. Some may prefer more of a mystery, but it drew me in much more to go into more detail! I really liked the ferry scene with the horse [ disturbing as it was ], as well as the story involving the breeder. It left me craving more info, [ like who was the father of this girl, where did they get her from, and what is she! ]. Totally set up the sequel!

I can't deny that the actors were superb in both movies, and they both stand as two of the best horrors made in a long time.

I have to add that I am very accustomed to watching subtitled movies so I wouldn't be influenced because of the language barrier.

What do you think?

I must say, I am a sucker for digital effects, so I liked the Ring better. I also didn't like the femal subordinate role in Ringu.

I haven't seen the movie Ringu, but I am an owner of the movie the Ring.
I think that foreign flicks are creative, but am sometimes dissappointed that modern technology isn't always used to enhance the thrill of the suspense.
The foreign flick the Eye, would make for an excellent thriller movie in an American re-make. The movie was awesome with some great effects already, but I still saw room for improvement.

Unfortunately 98% of american remakes of foreign films sacrifice the good story in favor of those improved SFX.

So, true! How can we avoid this from happening. It always seems that very few remakes are better than the original, but every now and then (rarely) a remake can be better. This only happens when the powers involved have a passion for the original movie and are not just seeing dollar signs.

Re: Another Japanese film......
Re: "The Eye"
I have heard a lot about this movie recently. We will be seeing it as soon as possible, and I'm sure we will like it , judging by what I have read.
I have read that Tom Cruise, of all people is looking into doing the American remake. This is very interesting! I just hope they are as true to it as the makers of the Ring, and don't over do it.

Anyone hear more about this, or see it yet?

I haven't heard about "The Eye", but as for The Ring, I definitely thought it was better than Ringu. I agree with Sarah, I didn't like the way the woman was subordinate to the guy and just followed him around... everything revolved around the guy, and the woman was just there to look pretty and to fill in the gaps in the conversation... at least, that's the way I interpreted it. I also agree that The Ring gave a lot more info and insight into the characters, which made me have more of an emotional attatchment to them. In The Ring, I actually cared about whether or not they were going to succeed, whereas in Ringu, I couldn't have cared less. The one thing I did like about Ringu was the way it seemed to be darker, both literally and figuratively. I don't know much about the way movies are filmed, and because I haven't seen it in a while I can't say anything for sure, but I was left with the impression that they used less light while filming it.
Also, as opposed to blairwitch, I haven't seen many foreign films, so the language barrier probably did affect me, and I am probably deathly biased, but oh well.

There have been many opinions on both of the films, the obvious fact is the The Ringu is the original and first in the franchise of the growing franchise but it's its american counter part which takes all the credit, Its a far better film than the original film on what it's based on. Purley the fact that it's been given the hollywood treatment.

I think they were both good but I liked Ringu better, I guess just because it was the original

hey guys,
i've seen the japanese version of ring 1 and 2, and the things that happen in ring 2 are a bit freaky, but i've heard they're not using any of that storyline for the american ring 2. In japanese ring 2 they go into how she comes out of the tellie etc and there are a few scary scenes.... but... i am a wimp, i cant watch anything scary by myself hehehe but i still love it

I liked both versions. The American version definitely was treated with more cash and care. The American version follows it's plot more smoothly and doesn't go stray off on tangents like many Japanese films do. I'm not knocking the original. It was great. It had an indie feel and look, like most Japanese horror movies do. Ringu has low budget written all over it and I like that, it makes me feel like someone was greenlighted for a movie witthout rules. They didn't have to please a certain group of investors or make changes to a story to fit someone's idea of what makes a movie sell. They got to make a movie the way they wanted (budget concerns aside) instead of being pressed out of Hollywood's or Japan's big movie machine.

I don't know if this is true at all, it's just an opinion...
