In no particular order:

Psycho, Rear Window, the Rope, Rebecca

Halloween (all except number 3)

Friday the 13th (all, even as corny as they are)

The Shining, the Sixth Sense, the Eye, Poltergeist, the Others, GhostShip (love movies with dead people)

House on Haunted Hill (both versions - Vincent Price and the recent one w/Taye Diggs)

Frailty, the Fog, Amityville Horror, Night of the Living Dead, Jeepers Creepers, the Ring, They, When Darkness Falls, Resident Evil, the Omen

the Lost Boys, From Dawn til Dusk, Interview with the Vampire, Queen of the Damned, Bram Stokers Dracula, (almost all vampire movies)

John Carpenter films

But I no longer scare from horror movies, I am more of a critic when watching.

These are in no order.....

The Evil Dead Trilogy....the first was the scariest the other 2 were more comedy than anything. But still they were great....Sam Raimi what a director!!

A Nightmare On Elm Street....The Original was the best; the others were nothing more than cheap carbon copys...however New Nightmare was better than what I thought it would be.

Halloween....A classic, what else can you say.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Original Version)....Saw it when I was 9 years old, didn't sleep for three days!!!

Candyman....Didn't really scare me, but just the thought of a hook going through flesh like that makes me trimble.

These are the greatest testaments to horror films in history:

The Shining- Stanley Kubrick and Jack doing a Steven King Novel, hey could have incorporated Carrot top and this movie still would rock.

Halloween- Michael Myers. Enough said.

Dawn Of the Dead- This movie still has the power to turn my stomach, All hail George Romero. Amped that the King will return with Land Of the Dead next year I have been waiting.

Jaws- This may be argued, but it cost coastal towns millions of dollars in lost tourist funds during the summer it was relesed and is probably the best acted horror film ever.

A Nightmare on Elm Street- This makes the cut because you know this movie scared you when you were young. Don't try to deny it.

The Ring - great creepy imagery, very stylistic
The Exorcist - Truly scary subject, superb makeup and effects
Night of the living dead - Bizarre visuals, black and white shocking claustrophobia
The Shining - Believable. Spooky isolation great chase scenes. Bad dad!
The Changeling - Lesser is more. The sounds, the bouncing ball, the sad story...

There are more that come to mind, but it looks like five is the chosen number...

It's funny, because there are so many horror movies out there that are better than the fifth freaking installment of Hellraiser... No fifth movie in a series can be good, it's simply impossible. It's great that you masturbate to Craig Sheffer's movies and all, we're proud of you, really!!! But that doesn't mean the movie was good. If you like the movie, great, but give a DECENT REASON!!! 09-20-2004, 08:27 PM
The reasons?

Why is it not acceptable for the 5th in a series to be the best film? The 3rd Lord of the Rings is generally accepted as being the best of the 3. Is there something special about the 3rd film that no 5th film can achieve? Am I missing something here?

Inferno is the best of any of the Hellraiser films, as it takes the general theme and turns it into a stylish crime thriller. The acting is of a good quality, the direction is cutting edge and the general production quality is very high for a so called 'b movie'. The general message of the film is also very profound, and is certainly better than most horror films.

The third LOTR is perceived as the best, but if there was a 4th that would be considered the best just because it was the last one, in all honesty the first lord of the rings was the best movie-wise, anyways, LOTR was originally a planned out series whereas Hellraiser was definetly NOT a planned out series, it was just more money more money more money

Actually, the lord of the rings trilogy was nothing if not a money grabbing operation, appealing to the mainstream with no artistic flair whatsoever.

In contrast, the Hellraiser films were more of an artistic thing. Money was not an issue and instead (especially the later films) were around purely to act as a lesson in film making. #5 is stylish and stlick, it is not like the other films, it is more of a crime thriller.

Have you actually seen it?

Yeh, and so is part 5 (it's barely on the theme at all, its more of a slick crime thriller).

Just because something is a sequel to a horror film it doesn't have to be Friday the 13th part 19.

I just watched the first episode of Craig Sheffer's latest endevour. It is called One Tree Hill or something. It is the softest, weakest attempt yet at portraying high school life. Everyone is always talking like what they have to say will stop the world or something. We all know high school is nothing but cheap beer, bad language and cheating (in school and outside). Sheffer is a sissy uncle/father figure who spends the entire time trying to play daddy to his asshole brothers bastard son so he can score with his mom. At least Dawson's Creek had Pacey.

Yor point is noted about it being better than the original.

I consider myself to be quite a good judge of films. I try to look at both sides of the points made on this forum or any forum, I'm gonna follow my gut feeling here and stick with my opinion, and not watch it. Pin head is not what I consider to be a scary character compared to Michael Myers, and Freddy (In the earliest movies) In fact Im almost certain its not best horror movie going.

PRETTY CERTAIN! LOL

People on this forum are pretty flexible with opinions. But maybe if you ridded yourself of the piss taking tone your apply to your choice of films you might get along with some of them. :?: :)

Pinhead only appears in two scenes, for no real reason and is barely involved in the storyline. The film is actually more a crime thriller/horror with a very loose connection to any of the other films. The direction/editing work is actually pretty sharp, in a different movie with a different cast and different story people would go as far as to say it was cutting edge and stylish. The story also has a very clever ending. I'm suprised it even used the name Hellraiser, because it may well have done better without the name, as many will just think it's another case of of an awful straight to video sequel of an 80's horror.

I disagree that people on this forum are pretty flexible with their opinions, while you may be (I don't know enough to say either way), the others certainly aren't. Within minutes of my first post, which simply stated that I like an actor (who most would not consider A grade), I had snobbish film elitists calling me 'dipshit' and the like for daring to enjoy films out of the IMDB top 250.

I would really like to love Friday the 13th, but I don't. It has nothing to do with the suspect acting, camera work or direction, but more to do with the story which takes repeated odd turns.

Nobody is aware that anyone else is getting bumped off until very near the end, which for me means there is little tension or suspense. I guess it is fairly unique for a film to use this method, so that’s fairly interesting.

When the mother reveals herself to the girl the violence turns from passable into typical substandard 80's cartoon horror, culminating in a stupid decapitation. Up until this point almost all of it could have actually happened, but it started getting a little far fetched by the point the girl is terrorised in the cabin, and by the final scene on the lake (I wont spoil it for those who haven't seen it) the story has passed all acceptable thresholds of ludicrousy.

The good thing about the original Friday as opposed to all the others, is that the plot is slightly more realistic. Jason Vorhee's mother went demented and wanted revenge against the people "responsible" for her son's death at the camp, and anyone else who got in her way. But then all of a sudden in the sequels, Jason actually comes back to life about a zillion times, and the horror is cheap and overdone.

"revenge against the people "responsible" for her son's death at the camp, and anyone else who got in her way"

No, it was a random killing spree. None of the counsellors were responsible for something that happened before they were even born, nor did they stand in the way of her revenge.

Also a boy, who expired 20+ years previously comes back to life.

In what way is the story 'realistic'?

That Kid

Wasn't the boy still dead in the first movie? It was his mother who was doing the killing, I believe. And like I said, she was slightly off her rocker [/understatement]. She was killing people who got in her way, which equates to everyone in the camp.

The boy should have been dead, but apparently not. Did you not catch the final scene?

The people weren't really getting in her way, she didn't seem to have any goal (aside perhaps from ensuring the camp would be closed for another 20 years). It was just a sensless murder spree done with an awful script, direction, acting and makeup & absolutely zero suspense. Then when you find out that he isn't actually dead it goes into crap overload.

Because the only thing that Friday the 13th had going for it was that it could have been real, it didn't have the directorial fineness, script or acting of other films. So when it descends into an awful pastiche of cartoon violence it loses any edge it might have had.

It's about time you learn to read English. Not once have I said that Friday the 13th (not Friday, note there is another film called that), is crap because Craig Sheffer isn't it. If you were actually capable of basic tasks such as reading whole sentances you would have seen that I have detailed in great depths the problem with this awful film.

Hey #1 Fan, I did some searching on the net, and turns out that Garfield is actually.....Craig Sheffer! Oh how conflicted you must be, the strain must be unbearable. All those nights spent wishing Craig Sheffer would come and teabag you, only to find out you've made mortal enemies with him in a horror movie forum. May as well shoot yourself.

(Sorry Garfield, no offense, got nothin but respect for ya.)

It's funny how you all make fun of actors who's films don't get theatrical releases, when people like Adam Sandler release 4 films a year that do.

Just because something is in the cinema doesn't make it good, perhaps when you guys hit puberty (or come within 5 years of it) you will realise it.

Mountainsofolivs
10-07-2004, 12:59 PM
And just cuz it didnt get released doesnt mean its good either, cock

KnightofNee
10-08-2004, 02:20 AM
I don't know about you guys but I don't remember any mention of Adam Sandler on the entire sight. I also don't think Adam Sandler is a good actor. I do however know that a lot of great films aren't released in major motion picture cinemas. The good ones usually do get billing at smaller theatres with more of an emphasis on their artistic quality. I odviously have gone through puberty though, you were picking hairs out of your teeth for an hour last night.

Hey kid you have to admit this shit is funny. :thumright:

The fox is an old cartoon character I've created. I've changed him lots of times, and the drawing on my sig represents him at the peak. Sly the Fox Strikes Back, movie idea.

The topic may be dead - I'm not sure.

Why did Sheffer post his favourite horror movie as Hellraiser 5 then proceed to say it's not really a horror?

But Sheffer needs to shut up about his "Top 250 IMDB film elitist" crap. I've mentioned various films that aren't in the Top 250 at IMDB, for example, Bad Eggs and Undead. I have yet to be flamed. The reason you are flamed is because you post crap.

And I also enjoy films even when they don't get theatrical releases. For example, The Big One, a Micheal Moore documentary, didn't get a theatrical release here and neither did Amelie or The Closet.

Stop being such a presumptous fool.

And for relevance to the original purpose of the thread I find that a good horror movie is one that keeps you scared once it's over - which is why most don't satisfy me. But The Sixth Sense kept me scared for at least a day afterwards and Signs kept me scared for a few hours afterward. I'm sure there are some that aren't by M. Night Shyamalan - but none that are coming to mind at the moment.

halloween is obviously on the higher scales of good horror movies. I mean, not too much blood but it was a slasher movie, how did they manage that? And then of course followed by its amazing sequel which continued the same night. I just didn't get boreill a ride. I couldn't imagine a horror buff not liking that movie. Oh, and of course wes craven's Scream, which is half horror half parody but it's still a brilliant written piece. (yes, we can argue about the last one...but parker posey kicks ass.)

No good sequels? How about Aliens? Or Godfather 2?
As for Horror, The Evil Dead 2 was more a remake than a true sequel but it showed what Raimi could do with more than a shoestring. Otherwise I can't think of any really good horror sequels off the top of my head

Of all the horror films I've seen (and I've seen a fair number of them) the one I personally found to be the scariest ever was "The Exorcism Of Emily Rose". I'm not saying that it's the scariest ever and anything else isn't. I'm just just saying what I felt personally about the film.
