View Full Version : Silent Hill
Konami of America announced that its hit psychological horror videogame series, Silent Hill, will be released worldwide as a major motion picture. Production company Davis Films will produce the feature film adaptation of Konami's popular franchise. Produced by Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo, Inc. (KCET), the Silent Hill games thrust players into a nightmarish world where they must unravel twisted storylines and battle grotesque creatures and terrifying monsters.
Bringing the series to the big screen is prolific producer Samuel Hadida whose credits include True Romance, directed by Tony Scott and written by Quentin Tarantino, Spider, directed by David Cronenberg, and Brotherhood of the Wolf, directed by Christophe Gans. Gans, who also directed the major motion picture, Crying Freeman, has been appointed as the director of the Silent Hill feature film.
"Silent Hill is a groundbreaking game with an atmosphere that has mesmerized millions of gamers all over the world - it is scary and clever," said Christophe Gans. "I am very proud to be associated with this game."
Working closely with the production team, Konami Corporation will oversee the script development, participating in the design of all the monsters, creatures and characters as well as aiding in the film's soundtrack composition.
Konami also said that the company is currently pursuing film production deals for its other blockbuster videogame franchises.

I am seriously excited for this. I've been waiting forever for this. As much as studios have a tendancy to butcher video game adaptations, the fact that Konami have their noses right in this one is very good sign.

So we're split on Snake. Who would you cast for the other roles, (assuming they would use the same characters we've seen thus far, which I doubt they will, but let's pretend)?

I remember playing through SH, and thinking this would be a good movie. It would need more dialouge, but it could be done. Are they still planning on a Fatal Frame movie? that game scared me quite a bit more than Silent Hill.

As probably all fans of the terrifying gaming series "Silent Hill" know, there is a successful movie adaption planned. The movie is coming along great so far and many of the fans are exited, including myself. There is one big problem, though. The producers of the movie has announced that the movie is not to be called "Silent Hill", but "Centralia". What exactly is Centralia? After beating all of the games and getting every ending not once have I heard or read the word Centralia. The fans of the game are infuriated at this seemingly pointless name change. There must be something done. Thug516@countingdown.com has started this petition to change the name of the Silent Hill movie Back to Silent Hill.
http://www.petitiononline.com/shm45678/petition.html
This petition is going to be sent in at the end of March, so please sign it before then.

Where did you hear this news?
Sorry I didn't include any proof.
In the text below they indirectly tell you that it is being called Centralia. This was written by one of the producers of the movie.
A derelict stretch of downtown Colborne Street will star in a horror movie to be filmed here in April.
Called Centralia, the film is based on the popular video game, Silent Hill. The independent feature will use run-down, vacant facades between Brant Avenue and Queen Street to stand in for a ghost town, location manager Jonathan Matthews said Tuesday.
"We needed to find stores that we could transform into looking derelict and old, where we wouldn't have to displace a business," Matthews said in a telephone interview from the production offices in Toronto.
"Here, half of our work is already done because the stores are already closed."
This was taken from comingsoon.com which got it from another site.Notice how at the beginning, it says,"Called Centralia....."
Look, there are other sources to find this. I feel that even if you don't believe me and the tons of other people who can tell bout this, you should sign the petition anyway if you don't want the name to be a bad thing. There can't be any harm in that.

I know it's a french link so I'll try to give the main points
Christophe Gans is directing the movie. Hiroyuki Owaku fromthe Silent Team is helping onthe script.
Laura Regan got the first role. Mark Dacascos will be in the movie but his part is still secret.
Tatopoulos will de designing the creatures from original designs by Ito Masahiro
Music by Konami team composer, Ita Masahiro

Now it's too late for anybody to sign it, though. It's been sent to both sources.
Why does anybody think I would make this up? I'm a big fan of Silent Hill and don't want the movie to get screwed up. That's all. The only reason I got a screen name at movieweb was because I wanted to post this petition.
If it's a good film then it's a good film, and if it's total crap then it's total crap. Either way I couldn't care less about the title.

No doubt. I agree with Carl. Did anyone complain that Constantine was actually called Hellblazer, and John Constantine is actually supposed to be British. Well...carl might have a beef with that one. Fucking americans.
Well I've never read a Hellblazer graphic novel, and Constantine just doesnt appeal to me so I have no beef, but even so after having seen both Churchill: The Hollywood Years, and Team America: World Police then I just laugh whenever America remake a hero as American.

The problem I have with this movie being made is the fact that most video game movies don't do very well. I liked Resident Evil and Resident Evil: Apocalypse but I pretty much "just like them". They weren't spectacular. However, all other video game movie have been terrible.

There is a movie filming down the street from where I work in Hamilton Ontario - called "Centralia". It's on Queen Street, so I suspect this is it. They were there yesterday, but not today - filming in the Scottish Rite building.

I thought this movie was pretty scary, but it also had a lot of annoying parts, so it's hard for me to outright say it was good.
Technically and artistically it was very well done. When the main star Rose crashes her car and is knocked unconscious, the screen goes black for quite a few seconds. The audience soon started laughing at this prolonged halt, and people started joking that it was a good but short movie. Very nice touch. The same long delay happened again in the movie, except at a point where Rose walks into a room with blinding white light.
The effects are very good. The constant rain of ashes outside, the ghost children glowing like embers, the staggering humanoid that leaks acid, the eerie grim reaper with his beaked metal mask, the faces on the individual insects, and so on. The only weak effect was the swarm of CGI insects, which looked unreal and moved too fast, sort of like the scarab beetles in "The Mummy" (1999). But mostly the film was quite visually impressive. I definitely got goosebumps several times throughout the movie, usually at the points when ghosts creep up silently behind Rose.
Now the bad parts: (1) Typically foolish horror story behavior, where people take great chances with their lives, such as Rose swinging across a bottomless pit via an untested hose, or Rose following her child far into a dark maze of corridors with just a cigarette lighter, or fooling with the radio while driving at high speed on a dangerous road. (2) Very bad acting on the girl's (Sharon's) part. Her voice was pitched too high, and she tried to sound too sweet and too naive. (3) A lot of unnecessary violence and gore, such as the massacre with snake-like barbed wires penetrating the bodies of everybody in the room and tearing them apart, and people (including a little girl) being burned alive. (4) What's with all the women? There were virtually no men of consequence anywhere in the plot. Rose the mother goes into the town alone, looking for her daughter, meets a female police officer, together they come arross another lady named Anne, and they all meet up with a group of people living in a shelter, headed by another woman. What's the chance of that, and what was the point of that, other than to perpetuate the newfangled trend of portraying strong women everywhere? Weird. (5) Lapses in logic, like why a woman would think her child is sleepwalking after chasing that child for miles, with the child constantly *running*. Or why Rose's car starts up many hours after she abandoned it because it wouldn't start the first time. And this with the doors having been left open and presumably running down the battery the whole time she was in the town. (6) Hackneyed themes: the child in danger, the parent going out of their way to save their child, going into the old archives to look up the history of a haunted place, and so on.
I guess if I have to give a single value assessment of the film I'd have to average the strong points with the weak points and rate it average, but that's misleading, since the strong points are definitely strong, just oddly mixed with weak points. Anyway, the audience applauded at the end, which I haven't seen done often, so apparently a lot of people liked the film and considered it to be good.
P.S.: Currently this film's rating on IMDb is 6.9/10, which is definitely above average, and some people even gave it a rave review.

a tad rash, but i'd have to agree. One of the worst movies i've seen in years. I can't even sit and write a review about it because i would get so disgusted that i paid to see it.

After writing the above review I read several comments on IMDb about the movie. I forgot to mention the confusing ending. I guess after seeing "Stay" and "From the Grave" recently, I'm getting used to confusing endings, so I didn't pay much attention to that aspect of the movie.
I think the confusing ending is what legendary_echoos means by "made no real sense." The explanation of the ending, according to IMDb commenters, is that the movie is based on a video game, so if you're not familiar with the video game and its multiple possible endings, you won't understand the movie's ending.
*spoiler*...
Apparently both the mother and child died somewhere during the story, so the real question is where. It looks like most people say it was during the car accident on the approach to the town, although there was one part where the mother is willing to give up her soul for her child, and another part where the girl's spirit has been split into a good half and a bad half, so I'm not convinced of that explanation. In any event, the ending the movie chose is supposed to be the "bad" ending of the video game.
In my opinion, any movie that is not understandable, at least after multiple viewings, was not put together well. The prime example of that is "2001", where nobody understood the film ending who didn't read the book first. The book "2001" was very clear and very interesting at the end, so I felt that the film of "2001" was badly flawed for not presenting an intelligible plot at the climax. So I'll also launch that criticism at "Silent Hill" and agree with you both there.

OK Silent Hill started off with a very good mood to it but the reason it was so terrible is because of what they did to the story. In the game there is no male lead, and when the script for the movie was orignally written it didnt contain any male charecters, and the studio got mad and made them rewrite it. What this amounted to was a seperate storyline in the movie that contributed absolutly nothing to do the story, and was really nothing more than fluff. The film was edited so terribly, it was easily the worst editing ive seen since Harry Potter 4, and that was pretty damn bad. Every suspensful scene (I say suspensful instead of scarey because this movie was NOT in the least bit scarey.) was killed by an awful cutback to the husband driving or walking around doing nothing. The end of the film was so mind-numbingly terrible that any attempt to even frighten the audience became totally in vain. Ive never seen a serious horror film with such un-scary monsters. It seems like eventually they gave up and just started up with the cgi gore (if u love cgi gore, this might be your movie!).
GOD! like i said this movie is so friggin hard to review because everytime i think about it i just wanna scowl and smash my head against the wall.

There are spoilers in here:
The ending is definitely more complicated than I originally thought after watching it. There seems to be several theories without any real definite answer. Personally, I don't think they died. I think they simply just entered the fantasy world of Silent Hill created by Alessa and once in there they were never able to escape (as shown in the end). I do like the ambiguity of it all and I think Silent Hill could gather a big cult following.

What this amounted to was a separate storyline in the movie that contributed absolutely nothing to do the story, and was really nothing more than fluff.
The original main character of the first Silent Hill game, which this movie is based on, was a man named Harry Mason. The writer and director decided to change it to a female because of the theme of mothers in the movie. As for the male character in the movie, though it really could have been better, I believe its purpose was to show the distinction between reality and fantasy.

I skipped over most of your posts, because I didn't want to ruin the movie which I haven't seen yet, but I am a fan of the games. I didn't get this quote, Banshee, because, aside from the third game, they were all male leads. Where did you get that idea?

I have to be honest I'm looking forward to seeing this sick movie. I really think they'll do a good job, I mean I saw the full trailer and I'm amazed. Can't f*** wait..
same i can't wait to get this on DVD, its the best re-enactment of the game. I can't wait no wonder the film is such a great recreation of the game – Akira Yamaoka and the Silent Hill team have supervised the making if the film from the beginning.

when i was watching the movie i had very low expectations and was impatient cos it didn't make sense until ofcourse the girl explained how she was burnt by the people.. but still that didn't clear up everything
one thing i don't know is why the little girl was shunned as a sinner then burned in the first place.. so she didn't hav a father?? that doesn't explain what the problem is
and the grim reaper guy im not sure wether he actually turned into that evil little girl (that explained the burnings near the end) or was she separate?
and if the reaper was the little girl, why did the reaper/little girl thrust a massive sword through a metal door trying to kill the mother and the cop woman,
and is there an explanation for the different types of monsters? like did the bugs with faces have any real signifigance??
and when the little girl/reaper thing sort of absorbs herself(itself) into the mother, is she(it) the blood that spills out from the mother when she is stabbed? and which causes the original burnt girl to rise up and cause havok?
and the father did have some sort of role in telling the story, "banshee" said the scenes with the father were "fluff" but i think he symbolised the living part, with all that nice warm light that accompanies some of his scenes. when the mother returns home with the girl, the house is all misty and dark, but when it shows the father, he is lying on the couch with warm light filling the room..
and is it just me or in the scene where the burnt girl rips apart those people, the mother holding her daughter tells her daughter not to open her eyes, but typically she does anyway and she sees the evil girl looking at her, WHICH I THOUGHT ABSORBED HERSELF INTO THE MOTHER! the evil girl gives her a shifty smile, does that mean that somehow the evil girl/reaper thing somehow attached itself into the daughter?
well, as you can see this movie left me with many questions, so i would appreciate it if you tried to answer them

and btw, if you look at my post above yours, I said the same thing.
I just rented the film and I've got to say that everything seemed to make sense to me, for one reason. After finishing Silent Hill 2 I was damn confused, so I finished it again, and again, and again until I'd seen every possible ending, and that just gave me a headache. So I went and researched on the Internet and found an extremely in depth analysis of the games story. Thanks to what I've read up on the actual town of Silent Hill (in the games) the storyline of the film seemed to fit together just fine.
This is how I understood everything. (Obiously big spoilers people!!!
Basically you have to appreciate that Silent Hill is no ordinary town. On the surface it may appear to be a nice and friendly tourist attraction but there is an ancient God that lives within the borders. (Samael) This Samael draws in tormented souls to Silent Hill and then traps them within an alternative realm just outside of our plane of existence, and uses their own fears against them.
In the film you had certain residents in the town had held onto the religious beliefs of the towns founders, and the result was the vicious witch hunt in which poor young Alessa was burned almost to death. She barely survived the traumatic experience, but was suffering a hell of a lot and was harboring quite a bit of hatred towards the town. This suffering drew old Samael to her. Trouble was there was still a good side to Alessa that Samael wanted to protect, and so he/it placed this personality into a child and removed it from the towns borders.
The problem now remained that Samael's power uses peoples fears against them, and the ihabitants of Silent Hill have still held onto their religious beliefs. They believed they were safe inside the church and so did not fear the darkness while they were inside it, which prevented the darkness from harming them.
At the start of the film the child returns to Silent Hill and Alessa sees her chance. They bring the mother and daughter into the alternate realm and use Sharon to draw in Rose. First though they must lead Rose through the town, having her face the embodiments of the towns guilt and The Pyramid Head (Alessa's Guardian and executor of her vengeance) so that she can see the reality for herself and thus empathize with Alessa. Once this is acomplished the dark portion of Alessa (Samael's creation) enters Roses body in order to use it as a Trojan horse. Rose you see is able to enter the church herself, where she eventually gets stabbed by Christabella in an act that shocks the town. This causes a degree of fear in the townsfolk, enabling the Darkness to emerge, which REALLY scared the townsfolk and all hell breaks lose. Alessa gains her revenge, and the dark portion of her then rejoins with Sharon to become the reborn Alessa.
Rose then leaves Silent Hill with Alessa, whom she still believes to be Sharon, but they are still within the alternate dimension that they will never again be able to escape from.
That was my understanding based on my already limited understanding of the games. It's completely different to the story of the first game (In which Alessa's mother was the cult leader who wanted to use the 2 children to ressurect Samael) which I unfortunately have only just started playing today, but as an alternative story entirely it seemed to fit in with the universe.
Maybe once I've gone through the series and seen the revalations of Silent Hill 3 I'll change my mind again. I can't say anything for certain except that I did enjoy the film.

Again, I skipped over most of Carl's post so as not to ruin the movie when I watch it, but let's not kid ourselves here...the games' plots are EXTREMELY convoluted, so why expect the movie's to be different?

Having seen the trailer, the sound of those sirens going off, sent shivers down my spine.
So off I went not really knowing that much about the plot, and never played the game, although friends at work raved about it way back when it was out on PS1.
I came out of the Cinema/Theatre, and thought, if it wasnt so mixed up, that could have been a fantastic film.
But having said that I thought there were some really good creepy moments, particuarly the bit with the nurses in the corridor..
All in all.definatley an aquired taste..

I wasn't being trivial, I was just clarifying what you meant. Changing a word can change the meaning of a sentence.

He meant to say Kubrick, and he said exactly that but with a spelling mistake. You meant to say, "It's an acquired taste." but what you actually said was "Like it or I'll come round your house and break your knee caps."
There's a big difference between the 2. 1 is a typo, done by typing slightly too fast, I.E a spelling error. The other was the wrong freakin word, done because you got 2 opposite but similarly spelled words confused, I.E being a retard. Now let's all just chill out and forget this matter please!!!

Silent Hill is now the best video game turned film yet. I haven't seen a film with such a great atmosphere and creepiness throughout a WHOLE movie since The Ring. The effects were so realistic it was unbelieveable. The story and effects deffinetly made up for the poor acting. I love Sean Bean though, he is a very good actor. I think Radha Mitchell(Rose) is a good actress, but she is not very good in the horror department. I didn't have very high hopes going to see this film, but I was surprised at how good it was. I highly recommend seeing this film. B-

It was not as bad, as it could.
The atmosphere at the movie is great, just like at the game, but the scenario isn't very interesting as for me.
