  • Welcome to the questionnaire/open forum concerning the MovieWeb User Awards for the Summer Season. For those unaware, several members of this delirious community have passed around the entertaining notion of having an semi-annual user based award ceremony on this site: for the users and by the users.

"What do you mean, exactly?" Well, after moviegeek's, diaigma's, and slysnide's inventive Oscar related voting forums, it only seemed practical that we host an award ceremony that honors the members of this community and their individual strengths, similar to the way the Academy honors their co-talents and fellow members.

Cooky categories would include the likes of "Strongest Seasonal Reviewer", "Comic-Book Aficionado", "Certified Wise-Ass", "Box-Office Prophet", "Local Animation Buff", "Man of the Classics", and so forth. However, this forum, other than being a place to put any questions you have concerning the ceremony, is also our nomination station for any and all awards that you would like to see included in the final ceremony. The entire point of this awards thing is to have fun, by giving credit where credit is due. If you feel there's an award that others would enjoy seeing, by all means share them. You, the community, will make the list of award nominees, and the eventual host will narrow the awards down to 10 categories.

This brings me to the host - you'll also be voting on which user you'd like to see host the awards, and should the accept, they have the honor and burden of seeing this thing through. Note that the host has to accurately count all the votes tallied, as well as honor the wishes of the community, fairly, so please choose wisely.

As you can see, while slightly pre-structured by myself, and soon-to-be maintained by the host, this entire ceremony hinges on you, the users, and your participation in the project. Let's make it fun and interesting. If you're worried that you won't be honored with something, know that we're all winners on this site... well sort of. Let's put it this way: you vote, you're a winner, you don't, you suck. Also, know that just by showing support for your fellow film fanatic, you're highly appreciated. Remember, this is a seasonal award ceremony, so if you don't strike gold this season, there's next season, and so forth, etc.

This specific forum, which once again concerns questions about the ceremony, as well as serves as a place to nominate categories and your host, will be open until next Friday (July 15th), after which we will have a week-long hiatus, and then the host will return to set up the official user nominations forum. That forum will stay open until one week before the summer season closes, in which case he or she will tally the votes and we'll release the news. But that's a ways away. Until then, nominate away, have fun, and if you have any suggestions concerning anything, please speak your piece. Cheers.

It's here! Sort-of... please be vocal about any and all opinions you may have. This entire thing is about the users, so speak your piece, and enjoy.

I'll start by nominating three categories I find interesting. Change or keep the titles, doesn't matter:

The "Class"-Act: a category for those rare users on the site who remain faithful to the "classics" of old.

Box Office Prophet: This is a category for the members of the community who constantly guesstimate the weekend earnings of movies, and more often than not, come pretty damn close.

Clinical Wise-Ass: For the users who can't help but see the "smarter" side in everything, be it Celluloid's "opinions", or my long winded comments, they always have something to say, all the time.

I know they may sounds cheesy, but the important thing is that they actual come with several instantly justifiable candidates.

  • @narrator Just to be clear, we're only nominating categories and a host at this point, correct? After those are decided upon, the host will narrow the categories down to 10, and then we'll hold a separate vote to determine the winners of each category. Did I get that right?

  • @narrator Since this is the 1st annual ceremony, and you've pretty much been the driving force behind getting everything organized, I think, at least for the inaugural ceremony, you should helm the duties of host. So, I nominate you :P

As far as the categories are concerned, I'm still brainstorming a bit. I really like a couple of the ones you threw out there. But the one I'm totally sure we should include is a category for the unofficial reviewer who is the most deserving of official status. Talk about a tight race. That'd be a 5 way battle royale for movieweb supremacy, lol. That, to me, is definitely the most intriguing category.

  • so we can throw around suggestions for the categories right?

    1. Epitome of Epic - people who does their reviews which focuses on films that have gallantry, heroism and courage!
    2. Laughter is the Best Medicine - this one deals with the comedy centric people :)
    3. To Infinity and Beyond / Beam me up Scottie! - space buffs :)
    4. Spoils of War - how about an award to people with war based reviews!
    5. Adrenaline Junkie - action men and women :)

    Anything about the Wild West?

Well, that's it for now... Check on you guys later! Cheers! :)

I'd love to host this thing. *hint hint* :P

To choose another user, I say either you @narrator or @insertusernamehere

  • @thedude-abides, yes, you got that right. Just host and category nominations for now. Oh, and any questions one might have.

And thanks for the nomination, but I doubt I'm suited for the part. Lol. In terms of hosting it's a toss-up between @insertusernamehere (other than me, he's been here the longest of the tagged folk, and he's due a proper host sesh), @moviegeek (his success with the Oscars forum is reason enough), and yourself @thedude-abides (because you don't get enough recognition in your views.

As far as categories are concerned, I'm liking the Most Deserving of "Official" Status, as well as a few mentions from @summit10. Though, since we're narrowing it down to 10 categories, I doubt we'd be able to be genre specific in terms of reviewers, but genre specific USERS might work (example: Diaigma is our animation buff, @ejk1 or @comicbookfan is our comic-book guy, etc).

@cupid, I'm not sure, but I believe we're trying to keep this a positive award ceremony, as opposed to a negative one, though if other people think the idea is good, I'm sure the host will consider it.

  • 1. Courteous commenter- person that hardly uses foul language, doesn't criticize other peoples comments but respects them, and (usually) takes a non-biased approach towards the article.

    2. Mr. Sophisticated- individual whose responses often require a second reading to fully comprehend due to the use of big words and sophisticated sentence structures. (nominate me if it took you more than once to understand this) ;)

    3. Laughter is the Best Medicine- See @summit10 description.

    4. Review Junkie- Individual who gives the best reviews ( I think it was discussed in a different forum but whatever)

    5. Best Avatar- Cheesy title aside, this ones to the person who always has the best/funny/clever/creative avatars.

    6. Class Act- See @narrator 's description.

    7. MW Juggernaut- Individual most likely to still be using MW in the next 3 years. And if you think it applies to more than one given this site is fun to be a part of, nominate the person who will still be the most active in the next 3 years.

    8. Mr. Know it all- Not to be confused with the MW smart-ass, this award is for the person that either claims to know information before MW releases it, or finds their information at other sources and posts them on MW with a big grin on his/her face singing "Nah Nah Nah Beat You." =P

    9. Box Office Prophet- See @narrator 's comment.

    10. Mr. MovieWeb- Pretty simple one. The award for the person that gives the best info. and actually goes above and beyond to contribute to the discussion. The person that you end up tagging and saying "totally agree" with that. Overall kind of the O.G of the site you might say :)

Those are my categories I'm sure there's better ones but these are the ones that popped right into my head. :)

  • @corey, I'm touched, but I believe you should stick to either your own vote, or insert's vote. Lol. Seeing as how he's voting for himself... *hint*hint* :P

@ChiRep-1, nice thorough list. Mr (or Mrs, for Slysnide, Lane, etc) Movieweb is definitely a brilliant idea. I'm gonna go ahead and add that to a list of my own nominees, as well as Mr(s). Sophisticated, and MW Juggernaut.

  • @insertusernamehere - In that case, you might as well nominate a category after yourself: "The Insertusernamehere Award". Narcissism and egotism is always welcome in an awards show such as this.

As for everyone else... I was expecting more replies by now. Tsk.

  • Billy Crystal has my vote for host. If he's unavailable, grab Steve Martin. Or just give it to @insertusernamehere. I'm impartial. And I nominate the grinch! Find an available category.

@narrator: Sir, all "f*cking around" aside, an award ceremony is an excellent idea and I admire your initiative. I feared that this was going to be another Halo adaptation, that it would never happen. I'll be back with some categories and nominations. We're all meeting at Chili's for the ceremony, right? :P

I'm gonna throw my hat into the ring and nominate @narrator for host. The guy usually writes eloquently enough for his long speeches, and is a natural leader among the classier lot of us.
Valar morghulis, Jon Snow. but valar dohaeris.

  • I am with @dan1. Narrator should host. We can make more than 10 nominees and each of us can present one of the winners.

  • I agree. @narrator should host it. Everyone knows I'm a far cry from classy. Hell just look at my avatar and few forums. That says it all. :P
You think Pike and Sykes haven't been watchin' us. They know what this is all about - and what do I have? Nothin' but you egg-suckin', chicken stealing gutter trash with not even sixty rounds between you. We're after men - and I wish to God I was with 'em
