Mongol is a foreign film, with subtitles. But it's so good it was nominated for a 2008 Academy Award.

Coming soon, this film is only screening at a few select theaters in a few cities in June, and in Toronto that means the Varsity Theater in the basement of the Manulife building at Bay and Bloor.

Mongol is an absolutely stunning historical epic by Russian filmmaker Sergei Bodrov. This movie is very similar to Conan the Barbarian, and I suppose Braveheart too, but in this case the hero, Temudjin (Ghengis Khan), gets lucky and marries a smart woman who actually saves his butt a few times - there's a twist.

Try and watch this film in the theater if you can...

  • this movie looks awesome. Do they show the battle in which Khan ultimately meets his fate? If so, how epic is the scene? Does the camera change filters and the world begin to shake? Is there lightning?
The terrain looks serene. Was it shot in China?

  • this does look pretty epic. i hear it's part one of a three part series on his life. i never knew so much could be devoted to genghis khan with the western world caring enough. sucks about the limited release. there best be some head chopping in it somewhere.
