Forums: There is nothing wrong with short reviews

  • I've noticed that many reviews from new users and other users that are less about detail and more right-to-the-point about films seem to get some unneeded hate for short reviews.

I'm referring to all these reviews that show up daily in both the DVD and Movie review section of the home page that highlights the latest 3 reviews from each category.

These reviews usually contain run-on sentences with all lower case letters, scarce use of punctuation, thin awareness for grammatical errors and sum-up the writer's thoughts in about 100 words or so. And you know what, there is nothing wrong with that.

I decided to stop disliking reviews, news feeds, videos or anything else on the site that shows that I too found something unappealing.

What I'm trying to get at is that most of these simpler reviews are from new users. I remember when I was new back in 2007. A flood of new users joined the site and short reviews were fine and dandy. Everyone was doing them and getting pats on the back for contributing to the site.

You don't need to pat any backs, but for the sake of new users and in hopes of expanding the MW community further back off the dislike buttons for a moment and find a way to connect with the newbies instead of writing them off.

"Hey! I liked that film, too!"

Be gentle with these new users.

    Thanks.

  • @SpaceCowboy -- Good point, man. I try to do that kind of stuff, and track new users on their progress. If I see any, I let them know that their getting better, etc. I hope some more people on this site can contribute to this "movement", if I may say.

  • Man, about 95@ of my reviews are four paragraphs or less. It's a matter of time, not effort. I watch a lot of movies, and I want to review them all, but I have a life, and don't have time to write an essay-length review of most films.

Movieweb in 2007 were the days, man. Quite frankly I prefer my format of reviews now, but reading through everybody's reviews were certainly much easier when everyone had two paragraphs tops going. One of the reason I started the One Paragraph competition was to bring back the classic days of MW. Haha, you remember my first account, the one that I had from 2007 to 2009? Carnage?! If you look through that account all my reviews are about three sentences long! lol

  • @corey -- I don't remember, nor have I seen the account name Carnage. But I have read some of your old reviews and it's nice to see how much progress you have made over the years. They were far from bad reviews, but it's completely different format. And yet your reviews continue to get even better - that's truly something, man. How old are you? If you don't mind me asking.

@XxNickTheFilmCriticXx I'm only seventeen and I've been an Official since I was sixteen, so yeah I've been pretty proud with how far I've come since I joined MW. I think I was only, yikes, 12 or 13 when I first joined the site. I was young, not as immature as @monkeyiron though, thankfully :P

  • @corey -- Ha. Oh, so @monkeyiron is only 12-13? That would make a lot more sense. Why did you lie about your age in that review - when you said you were 19?

@XxNickTheFilmCriticXx Must have been an older review of mine. I used to tell a different age because usually I don't like speaking out my real age on websites. Just a per-caution, but now that I'm involved and now everyone in the MW community I share out my real age, which is 17.

  • @corey -- I think it was only a year or so ago. But, all right. So, @monkeyiron is really that young, or..?

@XxNickTheFilmCriticXx I think he's sixteen honestly...which is quite sad. You'd think someone could spell at such an age.
  • @corey -- Wow, really?!? I highly doubt that, but you never know. Not to be offensive or anything. Does he actually go to school or is he home schooled? I'm home schooled, myself. But, I honestly think he knows how to spell and so on, I just think he's lazy with his grammar when it comes to the internet.

  • @corey Haha, yeah I remember that account. Didn't you also go by Purple Maggot? : / And even to me on facebook you would tell me you were ninteen. Then you told me you were 18. Now... I'm hearing you're seventeen!? You got a Benjamin Button thing going on here :P

@SpaceCowboy Didn't I tell you my real age over a year ago? If I didn't, then I'm a huge dickhe*d. If there is anyone I trust on the internet most, its you man. We go back all the way to 07' and still find sh*t to discuss!

  • @corey Oh sh*t... yeah it was a year ago :P Makes sense now. Time flies when your watching movies I guess.

  • @SpaceCowboy - Finally somebody has said it, I personally find short- middle length reviews to be the best. Good job man and I'm right by side in contributing with this movement as @XxNickTheFilmCriticXx said :).

@corey - I agree with @XxNickTheFilmCriticXx, I don't think that @monkeyiron doesn't know how to spell. Manly I think it's just the way he writes on the computer, alot of people just use their own slang ( It's all Myspace fault lol).

@XxNickTheFilmCriticXx - Your home schooled, you lucky son of a gun.
