Forums: Most Disappointing Movies of 2012: The MovieWeb Users Consensus

  • 2012 was full of letdowns. Vent here.

    Here is how this works.

It used to be that I would ask users to post their least favorite films. But we're going to try something different this year. Because people generally try to avoid films that look terrible, post instead the five films that you found most disappointing in 2012.

Post the five in a list.
Please post them in order. (#1 being the worst)

The results will be scored to find out which movie gets the MovieWeb Razzie for Most Disappointing Film of the Year.

The deadline to post is January 31st.

Post only one list. (You can delete an earlier post and update your list later on however. So feel free to post a "rough draft" now!).

Results will be scored on February 1st.

Take a look at last year's winners and losers:

  • @moviegeek: I actually never saw any movie that disappointed me this year. I try to avoid what I think will be bad movies though.

  • My most disappointing films of the year:

    1. The Dark Knight Rises
*No film failed to live up to the hype more in 2012 than did TDKR. By far, the worst of Nolan's trilogy.

    2. Lincoln
*Too spread-out. The film should've been called The Thirteenth Amendment, as it was more about getting the bill pushed through Congress than it was about the nation's 16th and most beloved president. Performances aside, this was a flat-out dud.

    3. Killing Them Softly
*Brad Pitt was obviously doing his friend a favor when he agreed to star in Andrew Dominick's follow-up to The Assassination of Jesse James.

    4. Anna Karenina
*This isn't what I had in mind when I heard Joe Wright and Keira Knightley were taking on Tolstoy's novel.

    5. The Hobbit
*The deus ex machina of the flying eagles saving the day, Gandalf's kissing of the butterfly, the scaling of the mountain, the Aragorn/Thorin parallels, the way the ring finds its way onto Bilbo's finger, and the entire first half-hour of the film was just simply too much rehash for any self-respecting moviegoer to handle. To put it simply, it's been done before, and done better.

  • 1.) Dark Shadows - I'm a huge Tim Burton fan, even enjoyed Alice and Wonderland, but this movie despite it's pitch perfect opening act was far too overstuffed with supporting characters with no room to breathe and an ever shifting tone that couldn't settle on comedy or thriller. Such a letdown.

2.) Alex Cross - My review says it all.

3.) Taken 2 - Honestly, for the first 30 minutes of this sequel I was wondering where all the hate was coming from. Once the action actually begins, I understood. Olivier Megaton is obviously skilled behind the camera (That rooftop chase didn't just magically appear), but his laziness in the editing room is inexcusable. Not to mention the last 30 minutes is nothing but a cheap rehash of the first film. Still not as bad as many say, but a letdown nonetheless.

4.) Underworld: Awakening - I'm an unapologetic fan of this franchise. I know most see it as only a marginally better version of Resident Evil, but I've long been taken by the dense mythology, Len Wiseman's stylish direction, and of course his gorgeous wife in tight black leather. Sadly, the fourth installment only offers the last of those three pros. It's loud, stupid, overly-cheesy, and without Wiseman at the helm, lacks fluidity.

5.) Life of Pi - Don't get me wrong, it's a very good movie. It just didn't move me the way I hoped it would. Then again, my theater's projector had a bulb out, so maybe I need to see it again. I'll get back to everyone on this one.

  • Well, since this has been one of my laziest years of watching movies, I doubt I'll be able to muster a list of actual disappointments. But here are the ones I had any interest of seeing that let me down a little.

1.) The Dark Knight Rises - Not a bad movie, but it didn't live up to its predecessor. It was clunky, dull, exhausting, and laughable when it tried being overly serious.

2.) Wreck-It Ralph - Again, just like TDKR, it's not a bad movie. If it felt more like a video game movie and less like a movie adaptation of Candyland then I wouldn't have had (m)any problems with it.

3.) TIE: This Is 40 / Five-Year Engagement - Both deal with similar themes which is why this is a tie. "This Is 40" is about a married couple turning 40 in the same week and between their birthdays all the baggage a 40-year-old is "expected" to get happens all at once. And Megan Fox plays yet another useless sex joke. At least Judd's oldest daughter showed she can act.

"The Five-Year Engagement" stars two very likeable and funny actors (Jason Segel and Emily Blunt) who have great chemistry together until the movie decides to turn away from its Comedy label and become a depressing Drama where no one is happy. Especially not the audience. @corey calling this movie "The Five-Hour Movie" also ain't very far from the truth.

4.) Men in Black 3 - Better than the second... but not by much.

    5.) Ted - Didn't laugh once

  • @moviegeek -- Thanks for the tag, man. Count most of the following users' list as my own.

@thedude-abides -- Besides "Anna Karenina (haven't seen it yet), spot f*cking on. You saved me time, that's for sure.
Tyler Durden: You're not your job. You're not how much money you have in the bank. You're not the car you drive. You're not the contents of your wallet. You're not your fucking khakis. You're the all-singing, all-dancing crap of the world.

  • @moviegeek: Umm...scratch that. I just remembered...

    1. "The Amazing Spider-Man" - The only things I liked were the visual effects/action sequences, James Horner's music score, Spidey's costume design, and Emma Stone (for not just being good but also gorgeous as hell). But the film overall felt like a very pointless reboot and Andrew Garfield wasn't that good as the new Peter Parker/Spider-Man in my book. I actually found more entertainment in the original 3 films (especially since J.K. Simmons was great at bringing such funny humor as J. Jonah Jameson). I also missed Danny Elfman's awesome theme music for the most part.

    2. "Red Tails" - Sure it was fun for the action sequences and visual effects, but the movie felt very long and I got so tired/bored halfway through and towards the end of the movie.

These movies were both just mediocre for me (3 stars each).

I do , I sure do sir, especially with The Hobbit :L ( being the first to post a generally negative review I was the first to get the fan boy whippings now everyone seems to have accepted that- it was a torrential rain of eye watering junk :L)

Though I really liked KTS I get exactly what you mean- Brad was just a selling point for the film. :)

  • The most disapointing movie I have seen in years is Prometheus. Lazy and eclectic while effectively demystifying one of the coolest aspects of the original Alien film - The Space Jockey. I did not hate this movie, I just needed so so so much more.

  • 5. Les Miserables

    4. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

    3. Anna Karenina

    2. Taken 2

    1. The Master

I know I may be hated for my #1 but I hoped for so much and got little out of it. However, the performances were amazing, especially Phoenix. Best of his career I believe.

    5. Taken 2: good, but it just needed more time to create that story.
