Forums: Tagging is messy, agreed?

  • I've noticed the same 10 or something lists of tags have been used around MovieWeb to get others' attention on the latest reviews and forums. While it's fine to copy/paste someone else's (at)mention list I do think it has gotten a little out of hand.

Most take a previous list of tags and use it directly as it is. Some others take the list and add or remove other users. Because of the constant adding and removing the listing of users has been carelessly handled.

I wanted to organize the format of tagging (if this hasn't already been done). I took a list already on the site and moved names around to help make adding and/or removing easier and to limit the possibility of tagging the same user more than once.

Let me know what you guys think about this and if you would like to use this list as a template.

  • @SpaceCowboy I think that's a smart idea. So this is the official tag list?

@SpaceCowboy We've been pondering this as well and some changes are coming down the line as a result. Twitter has this sort of stuff figured out in our eyes.

Some ideas we've been thinking about are, instead of adding people as friends etc, like Twitter, you "Follow" someone, and their activity. Releasing people from having to confirm you and all that madness.

The idea from there would be to, you yourself, be able to create "Lists" of people you Follow into specific groups, and then allowing you to tag the entire group in one swoop.

Let me know what kind of changes you guys would like to see in this arena.

  • @brian i don't know if this will pertain to the new setup, but to be able to delete/stop following users would be nice. i've got about 10 friends out of the ones I'm following who haven't participated on the site in years.

@thedude-abides yeah, thats the idea. YOU control who you follow and who you don't follow.

  • @ROFLitschristian It's not an official list. It's a template. It's just a few usernames in alphabetical order then you can copy if you want to tag a large group of people. You can repost the list and add or remove any users you would like. Hopefully you'll be putting those new names in alphabetical order as well.

  • @brian Ah, that would work actually. I just did this little tag list as a "for now" sort of thing. Change is always good.

  • I am getting tired of mass-tagging for lists. Really? Lists?

    Really?

  • @moviegeek: Right with ya buddy.
You think Pike and Sykes haven't been watchin' us. They know what this is all about - and what do I have? Nothin' but you egg-suckin', chicken stealing gutter trash with not even sixty rounds between you. We're after men - and I wish to God I was with 'em

  • @moviegeek @slysnide But without list tagging, how can we bash other's opinions!!!

  • I've never mass tagged and I probably never will. It's easy enough to see what your friends are doing just by looking at your feed, and likewise for them to see what you're doing.

  • I think it makes sense, I don't write many reviews but when I do I prefer to get acknowledged in some way whether its criticism or a simple good job. Well done @SpaceCowboy.

Just take my name off any tagging list please. I think I stated my position on it clearly with my "Stop Tagging Me, Please" forum almost a year ago, and most of you still involve me in the mass tags.

Not sure why everyone gets so annoyed with the tagging. Personally, I love when I'm tagged on people's lists and reviews. Thats just me, though.

  • Yeesh, maybe I shouldn't have done this.

  • @SpaceCowboy -- I wouldn't let those few individuals get you down. I personally think this was a great idea, and thanks for the tagging. I will remove a couple of names from the tag you made, but it has a great foundation.

@brian -- I really like the sound of that.

Reason I hate mass tagging #1: People go overboard. Example: The resident goofball just mass tagged everyone four times to the same forumtopic.
