Forums: The Road to the 2011 Oscars - EARLY PICKS?!

  • I've seen "Inception," (don't think it'll clinch a BP nom) and I'll be seeing "The King's Speech" (of which I've heard Rush & Firth are excellent) and wished to see "127 Hours," which is unfortunately at this time only a limited engagement. Will it get a wider release? I've heard from numerous persons, including Zuckerberg himself in interviews that "The Social Network" is highly dramatized, and passed on it for that reason. Plus it didn't interest me.

And Fincher's been slipping a bit. "Zodiac" woulda been an easy shoe in for Best Picture had he actually done some research into the real Graysmith and ergo had included a truthful climax rather than the highly fictionalized inference at film's end. For besides that, RDJ & Cox & Edwards & Ruffalo & Gyllenhaal were all shoe ins for acting nominations and Fincher for a certified Directorial win. As well as for costume and production design. Visually perfect with tone and setting, but virtually panned by critics for being a March release.
You think Pike and Sykes haven't been watchin' us. They know what this is all about - and what do I have? Nothin' but you egg-suckin', chicken stealing gutter trash with not even sixty rounds between you. We're after men - and I wish to God I was with 'em

First off, screw you, Ersslin, for spamming this site.

Second, remember that there are ten movies that will be nominated for Best Picture. Here's a list of potential noms:

    Inception
    The Social Network
    127 Hours
    Toy Story 3
    How to Train Your Dragon
    Tangled
    Black Swan
    King's Speech
    True Grit
    Rabbit Hole
    Biutiful

  • @ejk1 Nice list. But I would take off Tangled and Bitiful. I think The Kids are All Right, Winter's Bone, The Town, and Never Let Me Go all have a better shot.

@moviegeek1, the list wasn't complete. It was movies that have a chance to be part of the ten. The one's you mentioned are ones I simply forgot about. Now, the point is who will make the ten? Personally, I figure three animated movies won't make it, so Tangled will probably not get there. I feel Inception, 127 Hours, The Social Network, and King's speech are obvious choices. That leaves four spots remaining. What are those movies?

  • True grit and black swan are safe bets. I think the kids are all right will have strong support. I'm trying to figure out who 'The Blind Side' of this year will be... The movie that no one sees coming that has a lot of 'like' though not necessarily 'love'.

On a different note, wouldn't it be cool if Harry potter pt 2 got nominated for best pic next year?? The franchise certainly deserves some recognition!

  • HP 7:2 definitely will have plenty of technical merits for nominations :)

  • I would really like to see Winter's Bone get a nom for Best Picture. Jennifer Lawrence was amazing and the whole film was fantastic. As to the other spots, I think The Kids Are All Right and The Town both have a good shot and are great movies. Everyone has already mentioned the basic shoe-ins fors best picture. I have yet to see Black Swan but from what I hear there is plenty of Oscar buzz for it as well as 127 Hours. And boy would I love to see Tangled or HTTYD come out with the win for animated picture. I liked TS3 but I felt as far as all animated movies that have come out that Tangled and HTTYD were the best. Watching either of them win for best animated picture would make me happy.

  • Oh, yes. Winter's Bone. Good candidate!

  • Critics say "The Fighter" is better than its overly typical trailer.

  • @Narzion - TS3 for best picture? Nice thought, but it'll never happen.
Fincher for director? Very good chances.

  • To stray away from the stupidity of the above user, I'll get us back on topic. . .

Does anyone think that Jesse Eisenberg's chances at Oscar gold are hurt by his age and realtive newness? I mean, the Academy really isn't a fan of newcomers or debuts/breakouts.

Also, what do you think will be the most likely surprise Best Picture nominee (The Blind Side of 2010 :P)? I think How to Train Your Dragon could surprise, I Love You Phillip Morris (with a strong support from the gay community, maybe).

I think the three most likely to surprise are Harry Potter (strong, avid support of the franchise, not necessarily the individual film), Unstoppable (unanimous acclaim, though not overwhelming. It could slip into lower tallies), and Shutter Island (sort of love it or hate it, there was enough support for the cast and crew behind it to maybe sneak this one in.)
  • Hmm. Don't know about Shutter Island. The Academy always has to have something (at least nominated) for the gay community ::Jerry Seinfeld voice:: "and there's nothing wrong with that," and as much as I love Dragon, I'm not sure it will have a chance for a BP nom. Maybe this year's "Blind Side" could be . . . Rabbit Hole? I've heard crazy good stuff about that, and it's about parents dealing with the death of their child. Something many can relate to . . .

  • @Diaigma. Well Rabbit Hole legitimately has a shot and people know it. It is getting awards attention. whereas Blind Side, well, blindsided everyone.

To borrow your phrase: "Jokes aside", :P
  • In that case, I'm not sure we'll have a Blind Side this year. It was a "love it or hate it" year at the movies. Not a whole lot of surprises, just stiff competition :P

I think you're using "my phrase" more than I am now ;)

  • I like being surprised though, so I have my fingers crossed :) But because of the lack of really good films this year, the door is wide open for acclaimed blockbusters or indie flicks. (the letter being more likely :P)
  • What's your pick of Indie films, then?

  • Winter's Bone, Bitiful, things like that.

  • I'm cool with both of those. Sadly, next year isn't looking much better for the movies. My want to see list for 2011 is quite small at the moment.
