Blu-Ray Sales Surge After Format War Victory

Since the format war ended when Toshiba threw in the towel on February 19, Blu-Ray sales were seeing only moderate increases, until just a few weeks ago. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the March 11 Blu-Ray releases of Best Picture winner No Country for Old Men was accountable for 9.8% of the movie's total sales and the action flick Hitman claimed 12.8% of the sales in BD. When the format war was waging on, a Blu-Ray or HD DVD disc would usually account for 2-3% of a disc's first-week video sales.

Ever since Feb. 19 that percentage has risen, though. Michael Clayton, which was released on the 19th, saw 5.5% of the first-week sales in Blu-Ray and 30 Days of Night, released on February 26, had 8.9% of its opening week sales attributed to BD.

"Before, there was a tendency to play it safe and stick with the standard DVD," said Tom Adams, a home entertainment analyst for Adams Media Research. "But now, there's no longer anything to worry about."

Steve Feldstein, Fox senior VP or marketing and communication, agrees. "Consumers in the high-def marketplace are now purchasing with confidence," he said. "The confusion in the marketplace that you saw when there were two formats continues to work itself out, and once education campaigns begin and the retail presence (of Blu-ray) expands, we should start to see the numbers soar even higher."

Fox market researchers estimate that Blu-ray sales will hit $1 billion in consumer spending in calendar-year 2008, up from an estimated $300 million for combined Blu-ray and HD DVD sales in 2007

You said "DVD will soon be a thing of the past."

Hmmm, I don't think so somehow.
BluRay has won the HD format war but that was only really it's first minor skirmish compared to the altogether more insurmountable battle against standard dvd.
True Blu Ray is a superior picture to DVD but that alone is not enough to win over the mass market.
The mass market isn't as concerned over the actual quality of movies, if it wa then evey household would only have the best and the most Premiere brand equiptment in their homes.
DVD won out over VHS because of many advantages not least of all size difference, no more blind rewind or fast forward, more durability.
Blu Ray has NONE of those advantages over DVD.
The superior picture quality of Blu Ray will mean that it eventually will find a market place but that's unlikely to be the mass market that DVD now holds.

Like I said picture superior quality alone is unlikely to sell BluRay to the mass market, particuarly as many will need to fork out money for a new TV and Blu Ray player, as well as more expensive discs.
DVD will be here for a long, long time and it's actually Blu Ray that is fighting to stay in the battle and not become a thing of the past not DVD.

Hmmm the so called sales surge is a little deceptive.

What the percentages don't tell you is that titles like No Country For Old Men and Hitman are poor sellers compare to really big sellers like Casino Royale, Happy Feet, Pirates of the Caribbean etc etc.

No Country For Old Men only sold 693,878 in total sales (DVD and Blue Ray), the true blockbusters sell hundreds of millions.

The 9.8 % Blu Ray sales of No Country really only mean 68,000 Blu Ray copies sold worldwide.
Not really too much to get excited about.
Bearing in mind that Blu Ray sales are going to show a slight surge as HDDVD drops out of the market and many Blu Ray adoptors are will buy Blu Ray films to justify their Blu Ray player or PS3 purchase.
The 9.8% sales and 12.6% is a little misleading on the ture state of affairs but for marketing purposes will be milked for all it's worth by those with a stake in Blu Ray.
No the true time when Blu Ray can say it has made in roads into the DVD market place is when they can announce a 9.8 or 12.6 % penetration of a 100,000,000 seller.

I feel that day is a long, long way off just yet!

By the time all the people are willing and able to waste money on all of this, another new bullshit would have been developed. With technology improving their way into our pockets and all.

DVD was introduced around 1997. I think saying that people are just settling into the format is a bit overstating it. Like you said, you have 1,000. I have around 600. I don't plan on rebuying them either, that's a huge waste of money. I may rebuy some of the ones that to me are worth having on Blu such as Batman Begins when it comes out in a few months. LOTR is a must upgrade too when it becomes available, but I still watch my DVD's with upconverted picture no problem.

Technology has improved immensely in the past decade and I guess it's fair to say that things are progressing faster and that more spending from consumers in order to keep up seems pointless.

Also, people are forgetting that entertainment is a luxury, no one says you have to watch movies or TV, but since film & television is the #1 export of the United States then there is assumption that people want to watch their entertainment in bigger and better ways. I have nothing against people who aren't willing to adopt. The format is there for people who want it.

HD in the home has a long way to go so give it time like any other technology.

ya, i understand that the upconversion(and thanks cause i couldn't remeber that word for the life of me when i was writin the last one)is not as good, my thing is that ppl were just settling into dvd now all of a sudden there is a new format. Now u can say the same for VHS vs. DVD, but dvd @ the time was like this new crazy thing, smaller beteer quality than vhs, so dvd will stick around much much longer than VHS did. Also im prolly making this arguement casue i have close to 1,000 dvd's and dont want to buy them again lol

It's totally understandable that no one wants to plunk down tons-o-cash for a new technology that is just warming up. Everyone knows that within 2 years prices will drop significantly, I mean no one was quick to jump on the DVD bandwagon with $700 players, hell VHS stuck around for a long long time.

My entire set up cost around $2200 (57" DLP 1080p = $1300, PS3=$500, 6.1 Surround=$350). For me, it was worth it. For most right now, probably not. DVD won't die (it'll stick around longer than VHS that's for sure). For the experience you get it's worth getting a good home theater set up especially since if you search around you can find fantastic deals.

As for anyone who actually believes in digital downloads making disc media obsolete, here's an article for you.
