Basically, the story is like a Scarface, gangsta style version of Robin Hood. The main character name in this is Frank White, played by Christopher Walken. The movie starts out with him being released from prison and joining up with his old crew and best pal Jimmy, played Laurence Fishburne. The first thing this guy does when he gets out is pop some wealthy, old mob boss and takes his sh*t and donates it, to help build the poor areas of the city. This guy is well liked in the world and the story's written in the way that you like him. I mean this guy goes around killing criminals, which he is, but he turns it into a good thing. But you know from all that good doing, who's there to keep you down. Cops! This guy is financing busted down hospitals and poor neighborhoods, and some cops just pop out of nowhere and start pressing on this guy, which they get in trouble for.
The funny thing about this movie is that mostly every character in this is very likable. I mean the cops are dicks, but just doing there jobs, and Frank's just trying to help out his town the only way he knows. In a way, this is a good thriller. You don't know who's gonna die.
Christopher Walken, like in everything, is terrific in this, but they did f*ck his character over. This guy comes over to the dinner table with his friends and three women. Two of them are attractive for women. How come, they give this guy the ugliest broad in the room. She's so f*cking ugly, and the only problem i had with this movie is that she was in a lot of the scenes. How could you not like this guy. If you think this guy is a bad actor, then something must've fell on your head as a kid, or some sh*t happened to you. You can put this guy in any movie scene and get interested in his performance of dialogue. Man, i wish this guy was born like in the early 70's or something, so he could be in more movies, in today's society. I could just see him now, playing Agent Smith in The Matrix.
I have seen Laurence Fishburne in so many things, but i have never seen him play a goofy ass character like this. Not stupid goofy, funny goofy, because he was hilarious in this, almost like he told Eddie Murphy to eat his heart out. I also liked how they paired up these two young, black up and coming acting styles of Wesley Snipes and Fishburne. Great performances by both how they went back and forth at each others throat.
Last but not least, David Caruso, another magnificent performance. In fact, i liked all of Caruso's acting performances. Yeah, right up, until CSI:Miami premiered. I don't watch it like that, but sometimes i would flick over to it. It's either him or his character. He's cool in this, though, but too much cool can be very boring. This guy does the same sh*t every episode. Okay, recap of an episode: Some guy walking down the street thinking about his great day at work. All of a sudden some dude jumps out and chops his head off. Next morning, comes surround the crime scene. Caruso's car pulls up. He gets out, bends down and takes his sunglasses off and say, 'Hmm. Interesting.'. And he does this routine over and over and over and over. Anyway, he did well in this movie.
By the way, someone tell me why Steve Buschemi was in this. He only said like a few lines and that's it. He just disappeared. Unlike many gangsta films, this is the shortest gangsta film I've ever seen. You went to go take a pee break while the movie was still playing, the moment you come back, the credits would be on but great movie. I'd check it out if i were you.
