The Towering Inferno DVD: Review By Diaigma

. . . you're gonna kill 10,000 in one of these firetraps, and I'm gonna keep eating smoke and carrying out bodies until someone asks us . . . how to build them.

Quick Rent Review:

Figured it had been a long time since I've seen this film, so we rented it, and it was as if I had never watched it before. For a 70s disaster film, it's remarkably brilliant, which explains the "explosion" in disaster films that came after this. Not only that, but The Towering Inferno was nominated for 8 academy awards, the best in the genre until Titanic came on board. I have to say that this film, despite the tropes (save the cat, let the owner die) of the genre, it was remarkably acted and gripping. My hands, literally, started to sweat, and I was just holding them out in the open. This is a hot ride up The Towering Inferno.

When Doug Roberts learns that cutbacks were made to the wiring of his new skyscraper, now the tallest building in the world, he begins a desperate search to find the worst wires while the dedication party is well underway on the top floor. A fire erupts, trapping hundreds in an inescapable Towering Inferno! Will this penitent architect work with the awesomest fire chief in the world to save as many as they can, or will they literally burn in a hell of their own making?

Picture quality is sharp, especially for a mid-70s film, and the sound it equally sharp. Cover your ears for those explosions. The extra disc has an incredible "making of" the film for those who enjoy watching special and fire effects. This is a film that I would be happy to see again within the next year.
