Repo! The Genetic Opera DVD: Review By MutantFairy

I wish this DVD had been repo'd before I wasted time watching it.

What a disappointing mess. On paper this movie had so many things that would appeal to me: Sarah Brightman, musical, dystopian future, Anthony Stewart head, healthcare commentary, Goth sensibilities & even Paris Hilton (I admit it, I like her). This movie sucked. It's like someone took a bacon cheeseburger, cherry vanilla ice cream, French toast, root beer soda & nachos stuck them all in blender & made my favorite things into something nauseating. I didn't even enjoy the one nude scene because it was so gratuitous. The movie is about internal organs, not breast implants.

There were only a few things I liked. The cinematography was good (I enjoyed all the blue light). The Repo Man's costume was well designed & so were many of the other costumes. The exterior CGI shots were Blade Runner-esque. I think that's about it for the positive things about.

The story wasn't that original, which can sometimes be a good thing, a simple plot helps when you are trying new things, especially with a musical. But the music & the songs were terrible. Terrible! Not even Joan Jett could save these poorly written "songs." Usually a musical has a concept album that is sent to people to get the thing produced. This movie makes me wonder if anyone listened to it before they signed on. I can get that actors may not read a script but at least listen to the songs! Did Sarah Brightman owe someone a favor? She should not be in such an awful movie.

I kept waiting for this movie to end & didn't bother watching the extras. The scenes with the repossessions were done like a horror movie, they weren't meant to be funny. People are trying to turn this into a new Rocky Horror Picture Show but I don't find graphic violence to be funny. This movie just fails on almost every level.
