The Waterboy was an extremely successful comedy for Sandler, and upon re-watching it, you can see why, but it has definitely aged, and not particularly well. This film falls right in line with Sandler's other successful comedies of the time such as Happy Gillmore and The Wedding Singer with lots of slapstick comedy and hard-hitting physical humor. I remember enjoying The Waterboy when I first saw it, but the time for this brand of comedy seems to have come and gone and it barely managed to muster a chuckle. In case you have forgotten, The Waterboy tells the story of Bobby Boucher, college waterboy, who finds himself on the field as a player after it's revealed that he has an amazing talent for tackling by unleashing his pent-up frustrations. Of course, his overbearing mother -who also happens to be a major source of his frustrations- disapproves of his newfound talent, and his interest in a certain girl. Of course -spoiler alert- everything works out in the end after some on and off the field antics.
The transfer to Blu-ray is good, as would be expected, but comes with no special features -despite the original DVD release coming with a few, including a making-of featurette. So it's baffling why at least these weren't't included in the Blu-ray release. If you're a fan of The Waterboy -due to nostalgia or otherwise- then the Blu-ray should satisfy your need for some old-fashioned Sander slapstick and have it look better viewing it.
