Cougar Club DVD: Review By Brian Gallagher

The only thing that's mildly funny about this flick is the fact that we get appearances from the seemingly-desperate Carrie Fisher, Faye Dunnaway, Mo Collins and Joe Mantegna. Well, Warren Kole is semi-decent as Hogan, but really that's it.

THE BAD
Everything else.
THE FEATURE
From my first glimpse at this DVD, I knew this would not be one I would surprisingly enjoy. I just knew it. Even though it had assembled, surprisingly, a bunch of veteran actors to surround these young lead actors of Jason Jurman and Warren Kole, I knew it wouldn't be good. Even with performances the likes of Joe Mantegna, Izabella Scorupco, Jon Polito, Mo Collins, Joannie Laurer (a.k.a. the former WWE Chyna) and even Carrie Fisher and Faye Dunaway, I knew it'd be bad. With these fairly talented individuals, it sucks to be right sometimes.

Dunaway and Fisher were barely in the flick and that cast of veterans didn't make leads Jurman and Kole look better. It made the supporting cast look worse for just being in this crap-fest.

The story revolves around Spence and Hogan (Jurman and Cole) who just graduated from college. Spence is the play-it-safe type with a girlfriend and Hogan is the wild type who'll bang almost anything under the sun. They're about to take their first step on their way up the corporate ladder with these jobs at a law firm. The first step is indeed a doozy, though, as they're basically relegated to being gofers at the firm. Through a set of inane circ*mstances, they set up this club called the Cougar Club, which introduces younger men like themselves to sexy older women looking for action. Of course, most of the "Cougar" ladies are wives of the law firm guys, so a lot of sh*t ends up hitting the fan, and you'll smell it from a mile away.

It's supposed to be one of those fun, harmless and messageless movies that the studios hope fall under the "guilty pleasure" variety, but it doesn't even come close. The writing from Cris Mancuso is simply attrocious, and it's a wonder this script was sold for any sort of monetary compensation. The characters are weak, at best, and the script gives them nothing really important or even funny to say. The script is just in place to hold together this house of cards of a movie long enough for some nudity and celebrity cameos. Retarded.

There just really is a very little amount of fun to be had from the whole 97 minutes that is Cougar Club. I'm sure you can find something better to do with those 97 minutes. It's just too bad the filmmakers didn't...
THE EXTRAS
You know it's not a good sign when they make it a point to mention on the packaging that this disc has Topless Menus. Yeah. After you select a menu option, a girl takes off her top and dances around a bit on the menu screen. Innovative...

Cougar Blooper Reel is an assorted pile of crap from the movie that really isn't that funny at all. It's just the guys messing up their lines after getting giggle fits and stuff like that.

Foxy Cougar Outtakes is basically the same thing, and still teh same void of humor. Lame.

Deleted Scenes are last here, and there is just the same old crap here, well worthy of deletion. Then again, the whole movie really was worthy of deletion though...
THE VIDEO
The disc is presented in the widescreen format, in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio.
THE AUDIO
The sound is handled through the Dolby Digital 5.1 format.
THE PACKAGE
Nothing too special at all. The front has a well-endowed chick with a tank top that has the title, and four of the main players are pictured below with that large "topless menus" card as well. Lame.

The back as a sexy chick sitting backwards on a red chair, and the chair lists all the special features. To the right of that is a really really short synopsis, with a few random pics, the billing block and tech specs below that. Tres amateur...
THE FINAL WORD
If you've been just dying to see a DVD that has topless DVD menus, well, than Cougar Club is probably right for you. For the rest of you, I'd probably steer clear of this one.
