Toho, (which had severed it's ties with American International Pictures), Turned to Cinema Shares, to released their movies: Godzilla vs Gigan, Godzilla vs Megalon, and Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla.
Unfortunately the distribution company was unreliable. The films were released out of sequence. This film was released first. It made a tidey sum at the box office.
It then got the attention of NBC. Executives there saw it as a TV Special. That featured John Belushi,( in a Rubber Godzilla Suit), in between commercials.
When home video players, were being introduced into homes. This movie was released on VHS. Yet it was not the theatrical version. What was shown was the publiic domain NBC Version. Minus Belushi. An edited, croped to pan and scan, faded version of it's former self.
It took 33 years to finally see the film, as some have never seen it before.
Kick back! Eat popcorn with the kids and enjoy the monster sized Championship wrestling match. In TOHOSCOPE! With dual language tracks in English, Japanese.

This was the last Cheesy and Made for laughs Godzilla feature! What followed were the slightly dark MechaGodzilla films, that ended the classic TOHOSCOPE series.
The 85-96 series was filmed in PANAVISION.
The 2000 series returned to TOHOSCOPE.

I loved this movie as a kid, not so much as an adult. Def not Godzillas best but worth it for the horrible costume and dialogue.
