Impressive visuals and bland dialogue equate to an average animated tale

None of us had seen this yet, so we plopped it into the rental que and waited. To make a long story short, Bolt is a bundle of mixed feelings. My son enjoyed it, which matters, but the story, dialogue, and score were hardly impressive. A dog who thinks he's really a super dog, gets shipped by accident to the other side of the country, and forces a cat to guide him back. There are numerous films and shows out there that this feature borrowed, making it only slightly original in a few respects. The feature had impressive visuals, but that's about what makes this worthy of a rent. I do recall the trailers, and after watching this, I can see that all the good dialogue was used for the trailers, including the funny parts. Basically, if you saw the trailer, you saw all the funny and impressive parts.
The feature is lack-luster, but decent. Excellent picture quality too, but I have to wonder about the sound. It was rather off. I adjusted my stereo several times to improve the sound quality, but to no avail. The music seemed to drown the seemingly flat voice overs. Not much in the extras department, just ads for other Disney ventures. I could see myself watching this again in the near future, but not that near. Average on the replay value.
The creature animation was handled quite nicely, but the humans for hideous. The pigeons remind me too much of The Good Features trio from Animaniacs, though I found it amusing that pigeons were used as a mean to let the viewer know which part of the country our heroes were in, via accent. A decent watch for fans of animation, Bolt is, but forgivable if passed up while it was in theaters.
