THE FEATURE
I know Agent Orange wrote about this in his theatrical review of the film, but I feel like I have to talk about the sheer brilliance of hip hop dance movies. With the likes of 1984's Breakin' and Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo now on DVD, these legendary films who ventured into unclaimed territory with genre of breakdancing movies can finally have a home in everyone's collection.

You Got Served, release this year picks up right where the Breakin' left off. Breakdancing to get respect. Breakdancing to prove yourself. Breakdancing to get the girl. Breakdancing for every meaningful thing in your life. It doesn't get better then this!

The film does of course have it flaws. Financed, written, and produced by Christopher B. Stokes, this film is a sort of commercial vehicle for Stokes who managed the now defunct teen hip-hop group B2K. So yes, the script, the acting, and everything about the film is pretty self-serving, but strip away all that is money-grubbing aspects of the backend, strip away all of the bad acting and the wishy-washy storyline and look at the beauty of what's really there...breakdancing showdowns between people that have really mastered the art form. And they do it well.
THE EXTRAS
Audio Commentaries:

2 lackluster commentary tracks are included here...

The first from the director and the cast which provides some insight on the film's production. This commentary is pretty sub par as far as commentaries go as the director and thee cast focus on the various aspects of how "fun" it was to make the film, with explanations of the various sequences. Boring, but maybe not if you REALLY care about these actors.

The second commentary comes from some of the "other" people involved with the film. This commentary track becomes annoying as it get's a bit hectic with over a dozen people laughing and commenting on the various sequences in the film.

Featurette: Serve It Up

Scenes from the film. Cast & Crew interviews. Boring to say the least. As I mentioned before, the real juice in the film isn't the actors, the production, or the storyline...it's the dancing!

Featurette: Dance Breakdown & Battle of the Beat

This is more like it. Probably the best feature on the disc, serving up a multi-angle shots of the dance battle at the beginning of the film. Great stuff. The "Battle of the Beat" featurette features some various dances sequences performed by the 2 dance teams in the film. This is what we came here for.

B2K Music Video - "Badaboom"

Ugh. Watch the dance scenes in the movie instead.
THE VIDEO
The disc looks great. A pristine transfer from it's theatrical counterpart.
THE AUDIO
Booming hip-hop magic. The soundtrack will fair well on any system.
THE FINAL WORD
If you're not a fan of Hip Hop dancing, stay away. You'll hate it. If you do find breakdancing, Breakin', or Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo intriguing, you will find some worth in this more contemporary version.

Many will criticize MovieWeb's praise of this film, but like Agent Orange has already proclaimed, how can you not give props to a film that pays homage to the classics like Breakin'?
