The script was decent, but needed work. This could have been a movie that I take seriously, but the acting, directing and some scenes that were just either downright stupid, or poorly executed.
The story is decent. Maybe it has flaws, and it's totally unrealistic, but one that I could deal with if the movie had more time put into it. Greg is married to a pretty woman, but for some lame, unknown reason, he is cheating on her for a not so pretty Chinese woman. That's like Cash Warren cheating in Jessica Alba. But that's another story. Anyway, one day the wife comes home, they get in a fight, one thing leads to another, and before he knows it, he accidentally pushes her, causing her to fall down on the wooden floor and die. So he wraps up the body and dumps it in his car's trunk and goes on the road. Ok, so it sounds like they started the storyline, but didn't quite finish it. It seemed like it needed more thought, and depth to it. The scene where he accidentally kills her is so poorly shot, I was laughing to tears. One question I had is- Where did he think he's going? Later they somewhat explain that he is going to the lake to dump her in there, but it seems as though he never knew where he was going, until he got on the road.
The acting is actually part of what makes this movie so funny. The lead actor is so dorky looking... and well he's just a bad actor, that you'd have to see to believe. The wife that he accidentally kills is bearable, and so are a few of the cops he meets on the "haunted highway" but the Chinese girl he is cheating with is one of the worst actresses I have ever seen.
The director is Junchi Suzuki, who also wrote and produced. Maybe this film is such a disaster because he had to do it all himself. I actually feel bad for the guy, because he had no help, and the person who did the casting for him is a complete moron, plus his heart was in the right place. He had everything that this movie needed in his head, but when he came to write it, and direct it, he must have lost it.
The movie could have been good, but instead it turned out like this. Don't get me wrong, I truly do love this movie. I plan to buy it! That's how funny it was! If you are a fan of cheesy, poorly made horror flicks, then this is the ultimate in that genre. However, if you are looking for a good scare, this is not for you.
I wish there was results in the movie section, so that way I didn't feel obligated to movieweb to review this stuff that no one cares about, but here it is anyway. There's nothing wrong with the DVD, kinda bad picture, some trailers in the special features, and "Making of Haunted Highway." Replay value is great, because I would watch this movie over and over again!
