Right behind The Lost Boys, Fright Night is one of the best vampire films ever created. I love how they combine the horror and humor elements in this film. If you enjoy vampire films, you should really see this. This is the only vampire film I've ever seen that goes exactly, exactly, exactly by the vampire mythology handbook. The crosses, the holy water, not being able to enter someone's home without being invited, turning into bats, avoiding sunlight, garlic, and the non reflections from mirrors, which I'm pretty sure no vampire enjoys. I mean how would you like it if you couldn't see a big ass, booger hanging from your nose or broccoli that's stuck in your teeth, and also, you wouldn't even get to see how your new haircuts look, certainly one of the obligations of being a vampire. Another thing i liked about this movie was that the vampire went through metamorphosis to look like a real demonized vampire, which mostly all the old vampire movies had. However, today, basically, all they do is grow fangs and change their eye color.
In most vampire movies, you can, simply, tell that the vampires are the bad guys, but in this film, Terry Dandridge, the vampire, in my mind, seemed like a decent citizen, given his nature. Okay, here's a guy who comes over, from God knows where, gets the house, after he kills the owner, who was probably an *sshole anyway, who wouldn't give him a good deal, but he minded his own business. Never messed with his surrounding neighbors. All he wanted to do was make a decent living. Yeah, he killed a few women, but they were call girls; there's a million of them, not to be missed. All of a sudden, here comes this snotty, brat nosed kid, who can't even get it on with his girl, who in the beginning of the movie looks like the bride of Frankenstein; what was up with that hair ribbon into a ponytail. Anyway, this kid stuck his nose in business that didn't concern him, which brought the anger out Terry and forced him to come after him and his friends. Also, he was a great master to his ghoul, Billy Cole; he treated the guy like his brother. Man, if Renfield saw this relationship between a vampire and his ghoul, he would be, sorely, pissed off at Dracula.
Chris Sarandon, magnificently, nails this role as Terry Dandrige, which, in my opinion, makes him into an iconic horror actor, especially after Child's Play. Every time i watched this DVD, i would always say to myself 'where do i remember this girl from'. So, finally, gave up, went to IMDB, typed in Amanda Bearse, and there it was. Right in my f*cking face. Marcy D'Archy, of the corny ass marriage, along with Jefferson D'archy. I don't know how i missed that. In that dance scene, with Sarandon, she was a real sexy ass, but now, burnt to crisp, like i don't know what. Talk about being beaten with an ugly stick. I've seen better looking women her age.
'Evil' Ed Thompson, he's like the Randy in this movie. He knows everything about vampires and horror movies and doesn't even follow the rules. Curiously looking through his filmography, a lot of his movies seem to discredit his manhood: Just 18 and Gay, Latin Crotch Rockets, Transexual Prostitutes, which had a sequel by the way, Buff and Gay, Manhunt, Black Men, White Men, Butt Blazer, C*ck Pit, Private Temptations, Gay Men in Uniform, and last but not least Guys Who Crave Big C*cks. By the way, he used pseudonyms in those films, one was Sam Ritter.
Don't expect too much features from this DVD. All you get is a trailer and choice between wide and full screen, but that's all i really needed, although I'll be looking for a newer edition, with interviews with the cast, because being a classic film, it deserves it. Too bad i here there's a remake sparking up for this. Will it ever stop? Fright Night 2 was good as well but wasn't necessary, if you haven't seen it, you should check it out.
