Now I will start by saying let's say I dint know who the director was before watching it and someone would of ask me who i think directed this ,honestly the first director that would of come to mind would of been Tobee Hoper and i would of said he was trying to get back to his TCM unselting and disturbing roots and my second choice would of been a vague answer like a protege of Eli roth or Rob Zombie or even Takashi Miike since it really look like something they would of backed up. But in Reality this is a Uwe Boll film, yep you eard me right am gonna praise the hell of a Boll flick
am a hardcore horror fan , I watch horror for entertainment ,I know what it is to be unsetle and disturb by a film but i dont know what it is to be scare watching a flick and since my teens theres rarely a horror film that disturb and unsetles me , ive said it in the past that the only tru movie to really unsetle me and even put goose bumps on my skin was a key scene in the TCM and it still does. Well I have to thank Uwe Boll for getting that same feeling with a key scene , ill be quite honest , That scene was so unsetling i had to turn back the lamp on and it wasnt really working so I had to put the comentary right away so i would know how that scene was made so i could get rid of the unselting feeling and queaziness i was feeling , WoW I loved it
For once everything Boll decided to go with work out pretty damn well. first perfect locations , setting , costumes and even cars , he had perfectly the 70's , a lot of bigger budgeted flick dont bring you back to the 70's by the look they go with but he hit everything on the button.
also another first in Boll's body of work , all the acting in the flick is even and really more then decent. I had the perfect idea to finally put Micheal Paré has his lead , I always thought he was a underated actor and the only one who always gave is 100% in Bolls films ( he's almost in all of them) and played so many diferent types of character. He fitted the role and the look perfectly of a 70's cop and like i said suprisingly every bit parts gave their best , it really showed that for once everyone was truly onboard for his project and beleived in him.
Thank god he dint hired the same fx and make-up companie has In the name of the king and hired back the one he work with on Bloodrayne and wow even if i thought there stuff was decent in Bloodrayne , they really improved themselfs everything they did was quite effective, well taught and well done ,
Boll chose a more darker and black tone for his shooting , and his camera work is a bit more simple and by times has kinda a hectic hand held look that again is quite efective. The film is suprisingly nicely cut , again every trick boll went with work well
one of its few flaw is the score not that it is not good , but 2 or 3 nicely chosen 70's songs would of aded something to it , well it was probably because of the budget
Seed is a nasty peice of horror that in my opinion fells in the same line has Texas chainsaw massacre , I spit on your grave , The last house on the left, and more recently even Devil's rejects , Audition and Imprint . A lot of people will say that Bol put a lot of things and image strictly to shock people , well in my opinon if you think that you dint understand what he was trying to do with this film.
It's tru that he starts his film by showing you seed watching animal cruelty videos and by that exposes you to real videos of animal cruelty .But what everything you see was taken from PETA and with his approval ( i had even seen one of the videos they lended him tru there web site) and frankly is quite effective for 3 reasons , 1- it sets the unsetling tone right of the bat ,
2- it shows you that in real life the worst animal of all his truly man
3- It sets off the scene that i was talking about at the start of my review , and confused you on what real or fake during that scene.
It also tackles something that is usually a no-no in a horror film and something that not everyone like to see , but in my opinion thats what a tru unsetling and disturbing horror flick is all about
and there is a hammer scene that will be critisize has beeing really to long and plainly just gratuatious violence but in my opinion those saying that are also the ones that are not getting the point of Seth McFarlanes Familly guy ect.. bits/jokes/ scenes/sounds that go on forever
You can clearly see some influence like TCM and other oldie slasher and even the ending is clearly inspired by Saw , but they trully dont feel like rip-offs and feels more like hommages . and the cover and back cover is a bit misleading since you wont see that image in the film , but they me be the setting for part 2
now ive said in the past that am not a Boll defender but do think that the hardcore Boll haters are fanboys that are piss that he is meessing their favorite games up by taking to much liberty with the material or just people that dont like decent cheese and dont know what a guilty pleasure is. You cant called someone the worst director if you can find fans for his films , I detested Bloodrayne 2 , House of the dead , Alone in the dark and In the name of the king but i found fans for each of them ( well not ITNOTK yet well 1 actually) and more then just a few . Myself Bloodrayne is a guilty pleasure of mine that i re-watch and so is Postal ( wich i think is slightly better then a guilty pleasure) . But seed is not a guilty pleasure it is truly a really good peice of nasty and violent horror/slasher , if you like unsetling flicks like the oldies i mention check this one out it might quite suprise you but if you did find TCM, TLHOTL and ISOYG appaling then dont watch this you wont be able to appreciate it , cant really judge this has game adaptation since i never played the game but it's a great nasty peice of horror that in my opinion will have no problem building a strong cult status
