And Bill Clinton was still faithful to his wife Hillary. (Snicker snicker)
Among all these pop culture highlights us twenty something year olds were treated to two of the best animated superhero cartoon series of there time; Batman: the animated series and X-men: the animated series. These two series helped shape my generation's young minds to what a super hero was all about. (Unlike that Crummy Mullet headed Captain Planet jerk)
X-men was the show us marvel fans were waiting for. After a poorly received first attempt in the notorious pilot episode "pryde of the x-men" (check it out on you tube if you dare "dingo")
X men debuted on Fox kids much to the delight of recent readers of the Legendary X-men comic series by Jim Lee and Chris Claremont which debuted a year before as after the first story arc we knew that at long last they got these characters right.
So how does this series hold up seventeen years later? Surprisingly well considering this series is about as old as a Michael Jackson child molester joke (too soon?)
The animation is both clean and colorful that is coupled with "astonishing" sound effects that fans have been clamoring for to hear from Cyclops optic blasts to Wolverine's growl to Beasts..... Shakespeare quotes.
Aside from the roster of then current x-men line up (sans a half naked pylocke) were introduced to All the x-men’s gallery of unique "dark" villains such as Magneto, the sentinels, Apocalypse, and even my personal favorite Sabretooth.
While the show was a bit more Saturday morning friendly then the dark and exciting Batman show, X-men can be credited with providing some of the best x-men stories ever written into animated form a task that would have been for naught for the talents of Claremont himself (who coincidently wrote the classic stories fans know and love from back in the 70's to mid 90's)
A favorite included in this series is the classic "days of future past" story arc that is expertly done in that its both entertaining to younger fans as well as those who read the original story back in the 80's.
Now that's not to say the show isn’t without its faults. Some of the voice actors are memorable (some so good that they were included in the "classic" video game adaptations) some just come off as annoying as a Jimmy Fallon monologue.
Also ol Wolvie's character is severely de clawed in this series as we all know that you could never do a character who experiences "berserker rages", smokes cigars, goes to bars and sleeps with other peoples girlfriends (pretty much Colin Farrel's life)can never be done justice on a Saturday morning cartoon. It wasn’t until I read in an article a couple years later that some of the writers hated Wolverine's character and purposely made him less appealing to fans hence the first episode featuring Wolvie getting taken out by Jubilee. (!?)
While Wolvie suffers the same cannot be said about the SECOND most popular x-man (no not Maggot) the ragin Cajon (no not James Carville either!) Gambit is ever the smooth talking smoother criminal we all know and have missed during the movie trilogy. Gambit is funny and clever and the show really highlights his explosive personality nicely. (Bad pun sorry)
With both entertaining action and undertones about prejudice and being accepted this first collection is truly uncanny. Nuff said.
The Good: A classic cartoon series that truly brings Lee's original art to life with colorful battles, witty dialogue, and some of the darkest undertones this side of a Tim Burton movie.
The Bad: Some of the animation doesn’t hold up well compared to more recent superhero series. Some of the screaming by the actors is about as annoying as A Carrot Top comedy act. Also Zippo on the special features although the trade off is that you get an entire season for one low price.
The Ugly: Wolvie’s character talks big, but ultimately gets tossed like a salad by nearly every character... almost like an animated Joe Dirt.

Hahaha of course I remember that 2-part episode..s, JB, I mean come on you are talking to the Spider-Man master here. I own every issue of ASM up till the end of the JMS run and the entire cartoon on HQ bootlegs/backups in HQ AVIs. I'm a Spidey nut, hahaha but you already knew this. Yes, "The Mutant Agenda" and "Mutants' Revenge" see I even know the names of the episodes hahaha beat that. Where Spidey is battling his mutation into Man-Spider AKA the "Neogenic Nightmare" Season 2 arc, and visits Prof X the leading man on mutation. Classic right there, Wolvie and Spidey in the same show, lol, its like you and me here on MovieWeb JB haha. Yes I definitely hear you on the kiddie aspect, yes Morbius was a suction-cupped-fingertipped-plasma sucker, but if you think about this, Semper (creator) was ordered to censor the cartoon. No words about "kill," "die," etc. So they said words like "destroy" instead. Plus in the last ep of Season 1, "Day of the Chameleon" they cut out a scene with the helicopter crashing into the side of the building and the bomb going off under the World Trade Center. And this was all before 9/11. Yes, I know too much about Spidey, I've been told this before. But X-Men was just as good. I loved the villains, and I never thought about Wolvie always getting his ass handed to him, but now that I'm re-watching it, you are right. Almost everytime he fights someone.

hahaha glad im not the only 1 who remembers that crummy theme song hahahaha. Yeah those shows were great back in the day although i hafta admit Spiderman animated was a bit too "saturday mornie" for me. i mean, turning Morbius into a "plasma vampire" who sucks from his fingertips? lame. also they reused alot of animation. other then that it was cool cuz he had alot of Guest stars you remember the 2 part episode were Sp;idey met the x men? hahahaha good ol days eh bub?

Captain Planet... He's our hero
Gonna take pollution down to zero...
LOL Just kidding JB! No he's not my favorite and yes, I used to watch that show. But I agree with you that Batman TAS and X-Men TAS are two of the highest rated superhero shows on during their time. Have to add Spider-Man TAS to that list as well, though, but if it wasn't for the X-Men success, Spidey would have no cartoon. Nevertheless, of all mediums, these three cartoons are THE BEST representations of their comic books in any medium. I remember I had that "Captive Hearts" comic issue and when I saw it again on this DVD I was thrilled. Of course when you are so young that you are into the cartoons and Power Rangers and not reading the comics on a serious level, you don't look for things like that. But with the cavalcade of films messing up comic book heroes, it's nice to see a medium done right. Vols. 3 and 4 were just released, and I plan on picking these up since I own Vols. 1 and 2 and the entire Batman TAS collection. Now, if they'll only release Spider-Man TAS in Region 1 so I can throw away my darn bootlegs....
Good review BTW.

This was one one the greatist animated shows I watched when I was a kid. Its what made me interested in comics. Im glad that I grew up watching it. Kids now a days don't get that experience we did. Most of the shows they get are bad or they get tired of them quick. But Xmen was one I never got tired of. Gambit was awesome in the series. Great job my friend. Those were great memories from a kid.

Raoul Duke
You're right though. Some didn't match up too well. I remember Lady Deathstrike had a pretty weird voice. And Colossus's accent was way too thick. Sounded a bit like Dolph Lundgren. Which isn't really a bad thing. lol. I'm rambling.

One of the greatest animated series ever. The voice acting is perfect. I love this show. Some of the best X Men story arcs were brought to life through this series. Truthfully, I'll take an episode or two of this over any of the X Men movies. Origins included. Awesome review, Johnny. Way to rep the classics.
