ladies and gentlemen, how about a round of applause for france...

okay, knock it off.

so years and years before france became known among movie nerds all over the usa as a great exporter of some seriously impressive horror movies, there was this understated little gem which no one ever heard of nor has anyone ever seen (if i am to believe the sheer lack of acknowledgment by movieweb patrons in the movie's profile page.)

i was, and i am not exaggerating, hypnotised by this movie, which seems strange when you consider that for all intents and purposes, it is not anything special to look at. it is very straight forward in how it presents itself, it is the story of a woman at her summer house on an island (while her husband is away at work in paris) who allows a sociopathic nomad girl to pitch a tent in her yard because she is lonely and wants the company.

that's pretty much all i can tell you without ruining it, but somehow in this very modest story idea the director managed to grab me by the eyeballs and disallow me from looking away until it was over.

here's where trouble comes into paradise; it's only half a movie.

i don't say that because it is only about 70 minutes long, but because the movie basically ends when the husband returns and finds out what has been happening while he was away, and doesn't continue on as he tries to resolve the situation that he finds upon his return.

still though, if you like reading subtitles and wondering what will happen next and don't mind feeling like you're indulging in a little pretentious foreign cinema, then clear and hour off on your schedule and check this one out.

i forgot to mention that this movie was made in 1997, not 2003, hence my "years and years" comment.
