Silver Bullet DVD: Review By Mushy
As one of the most underappreciated movies of the 1980s, Silver Bullet still resonates just as strongly 23 years after its creation.

THE FEATURE
When the town of Tarker's Mills suddenly finds themselves dealing with a spate of killings, it seems like this once peaceful place has been taken hostage by a nightmare Marty Coslaw (Corey Haim) looks a little deeper into things and finds out that it isn't just a normal maniac that the town is up against. It turns out that there is a werewolf on the loose and he's gaining strength as the moon gets fuller and fuller. Aided by his cool Uncle Red (Gary Busey), they set about trying to stop this beast before it's too late.

THE EXTRAS
No extras came with this release.
THE VIDEO
Widescreen version enhanced for 16:9 TVs. This movie looked pretty darn good on DVD. I took the time to really examine the picture quality because I wanted to see how this film looked almost 30 years ago. I was pleasantly surprised to find that everything looked really solid. The compression was good, I didn't notice any dirt on the images, and everything seemed to be in its proper DVD order.
THE AUDIO
Dolby Digital. English and French mono. Subtitled in English. The audio is the film was good. I had to turn things up about halfway on my TV but once I did that the audio stayed pretty well leveled throughout the movie. There isn't anything too amazing but its nice to see that Paramount has kept things intact from when I initially saw this film.
THE PACKAGE
Why didn't they put Corey Haim on the cover of this release? It would seem like a slam dunk way of selling DVDs? They could appeal to the people like me that have known about him forever. Then they could also curry favor with his new fans from The Two Coreys reality show. The front of this release features a full moon, a cross, and some werewolves in the background. The back gives us some images from this movie, a well written description, technical specs and a cast list.
THE FINAL WORD
How in the world does this movie not come with any extras? I mean companies much smaller than Paramount home entertainment release DVDs en masse with all sorts of DVD extras. In fact, people will find scores of DVDs that are self released containing content that will tell you everything you could want to know about a movie you want to know nothing about. Yet, somehow a film like this doesn't get anything in the way of a proper release!!!
Aside from those shortcomings, Silver Bullet is very much worth owning on DVD because something tells me there will not be another version to own.

I thought the movie was good, but no where near 'one of the most underappreciated movies of the 80's. The story was great of course because it was written by Stephen King, but the acting and special effects take this movie from one of the best to just ok. I think there are many underrated movies from the 1980's, this is just not one of them.
