24: Redemption DVD: Review By valsquita

Redemption was aptly named because everyone associated with 24 have been redeemed from their flawed 6th season. I liked Season 6, but it was a little "Jack-light" and had way too much political crap. Redemption made up for that in a big way!

Redemption was a lot better than I expected. I had high hopes it would be good, but, I have been let down in the past, so I was a little pessimistic. Jack is definitely back and he's as bad ass as ever. The prequel, I think, is a must see before viewing Season 7. It explains a lot about what Jack has been doing since he was last seen pondering his life at the edge of the cliff. The Washington stuff was kept to a minimum, which is good, but was interesting and let the audience get a taste of the new administration. The photography of Africa was superb and the director and editors did a great job in contrasting the beauty of Africa with the monochrome bleakness of Washington DC. Kiefer was great, as always, as Jack Bauer and Robert Carlyle was excellent as Jack's old friend, Carl Benton. The African actors were stupendous and refreshing. Too many child actors here in the states are so precocious they're sickening. The child who portrayed Willie is truly a gifted actor and I hope to see more of him in the future.

Now, to the movie itself. I like the pacing of the movie and the story, itself. It went by so fast that I was amazed that the allotted two hours was over so soon, even with the commercial breaks. There were plenty of thrills and the ticking clock helped. Jack looked really good and was able to make quick critical decisions, which his character is known for. He has not lost his compassion, though he did struggle a few times in regaining his empathy for others. This was important for his character as Jack came back from his year of wondering the globe to find himself. Great to see his determination, at the end of the movie, to do what is right, even if he has to sacrifice himself. That's what people love about Jack and we're all so glad he's back!
