THE FEATURE
Denis Leary's pride and joy is "Rescue Me," a semi-continuation of what he started on the short-lived "The Job." He and writing partner Peter Tolan move the story to the FDNY from the NYPD. Initially, "Rescue Me" started as firefighters struggling to deal with ghosts and emotions of a post-9/11 world in NYC. What the show has evolved into is a homage and genuine look into the lives of these real-life superheroes.
Denis Leary has served has both brilliant writer and centerpiece star. He expertly captures the pain emotion of flawed man Tommy Gavin, plagued by separation from family, alcoholism, death--and life on the job.
Not only is there great individual supporting work--Tatum O'Neal as TOmmy's boozing sister, Daniel Sunjata as firehouse playboy Franco, and my personal favorite John Scurti as firehouse lieutenant Ken "Lou" Shea--but the entire ensemble is the best since "Homicide: Life on the Street."

THE EXTRAS
Plenty of small cast interviews, entertaining but too short, in my opinion. An interactive map of the "service area" for the guys of 62 Truck is a nice addition to previous seasons, as is the featurettes exploring the many sub-themes, such as homosexuality.
And what Denis Leary vehicle isn't without a funny gag reel. Ironically enough, most of the mess-ups shown are made by its star and creator.

THE VIDEO
Typical TV show on DVD quality. Exceptionally sharp to watch when the guys are battling big blazes.
THE AUDIO
Again, stardard TV-DVD fare but listen to the explosions and little sounds much crisper--just like in the middle of all the smoke with the firefighters.
THE PACKAGE
Artwork continues pattern from previous seasons: season keyart on front, same/similar pictures and backgrounds on reverse cover.
THE FINAL WORD
The quality of the show is what makes this a definite own. Fans of Denis Leary, firefighters movies & shows, and dark humor & deep drama will love "Rescue Me," the best show on television that continues to send its competitors up in smoke.
