A Good Woman DVD: Review By kaismith

Visual poetry! A beautiful period piece to kickback with a bottle of red or white on a Sunday night with a significant other. Charming characters coupled with an entertaining story filled with sex mystery and scandal lifted from Oscar Wilde's play, Lady Windemere's Fan.

THE GOOD
Visual poetry! A beautiful period piece to kickback with a bottle of red or white on a Sunday night with a significant other. Charming characters coupled with an entertaining story filled with sex mystery and scandal lifted from Oscar Wilde's play, Lady Windemere's Fan.
THE BAD
The lack there of supplemental features.
THE FEATURE
Set in the 1930s, Mrs. Erlynne (Helen Hunt) flees her sketchy sexual past and debts for the Amalfi Coast in order to start a new. She meets a young couple Meg (Scarlett Johansson) and Tom (Mark Umbers) Windemere while out and about and soon befriends Meg. Mr. Windemere does what he can to help Mrs. Erlynne gain acceptance back into a upper class society with some shred of respect.

Director Mike Barker takes draws upon the Oscar Wilde play Lady Windemere's Fan bringing about a romantic drama with an all star cast that gives outstanding performances. Scarlette is fabulous as always but Helen Hunt really stands out. The pace is relaxed but there is enough conflict to keep you wondering what will happen next.
THE EXTRAS
A little more was expected in this department.

Director and Producer Commentary
THE VIDEO
Widescreen - 16 x 9. Costumes and sets just gorgeous. You get lost in the 30's instantly from the very first scene established by the unique jewelry and costumes the women snickering are wearing. The panning shots are beautiful as well. Some of the shots with the Italian children about in the town remind me some of Henri Cartier Bresson's images.
THE AUDIO
Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound with English and Spanish subtitle options. The opening song sets the mood of the 30s perfectly and further supports the opening scenes. The soundtrack is so rich you can get lost in it alone.
THE PACKAGE
Scarlette's face fills the sky of the Amalfi coast shot on the left. Hunt sit in the fore ground looking radiant in a tan and silver lined dress and to the top right is Wilkinson looking to the left
THE FINAL WORD
Gorgeous sets, beautiful costumes and amazing performances. Oh and I can't forget a plot wrought with romance, drama, sex, seduction and the infamous scandal How can you go wrong?

Worth the purchase despite the lack of supplemental features.
