THE GOOD
Hathaway does a remarkable job playing this young woman. The actress did extensive background research on Jane Austen, which comes through on the screen.
THE BAD
Obviously Jane Austen fans know about her novels and her characters, however it would have been nice if there was a section about the novels with brief descriptions of each so newcomers to Austen could learn about them and understand a little more about what the interviews were referring to.
THE FEATURE
Anne Hathaway plays a young Jane Austen in this delightful story of the earlier years of one of Britain's most beloved authors. This is set in the time before Jane began writing her now-famous novels and shows how her own life influenced her fictional characters.
THE EXTRAS
The bonus features make this a thoroughly enjoyable DVD filled with deleted scenes and a feature on the real Jane Austen and how the moviemakers portrayed her life and times. Perhaps the best bonus is the "Fact and Footnotes" feature which, when turned on, will display facts about the history, the geography, the social mores, the wardrobe and more, giving viewers a great lesson about Jane and the times in which she lived.
THE FINAL WORD
With the added feature of the pop-up facts, this DVD is a wonderful history lesson combined with a glimpse of Jane Austen and her own personal romance. This woman wrote some of the most beloved romantic novels and the movie looks at the life and times of Jane Austen. It's a beautiful journey through her young life.
