Don Cheadle Will Return as James Rhodes in ‘The Avengers: Age of Ultron’

The character was last seen in Marvel’s Phase Two sequel ‘Iron Man 3’. Will War Machine or Iron Patriot fill in for Tony Stark?
The character was last seen in Marvels Phase Two sequel Iron Man 3. Will War Machine or Iron Patriot fill in for Tony Stark?

While doing an early morning interview to talk about his Golden Globe nomination for House of Lies, Don Cheadle seemingly confirmed his involvement in Avengers: Age of Ultron to USA Today.

The story doesn't include an actual quote from the actor saying he has been cast in this Marvel Phase Two sequel, but it does say that the actor, "has a part to film in the next Avengers movie," along with his Miles Davis biopic Kill the Trumpet Player.

What's interesting is Don Cheadle's Marvel involvement has been limited to just Iron Man 2 and Iron Man 3. He did not appear in last year's blockbuster Marvel's The Avengers. However, while promoting Iron Man 3, the actor did hint about having conversations with Joss Whedon about appearing in Avengers: Age of Ultron. The actor also mentioned visiting the set of next year's Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but it hasn't been confirmed if James Rhodes actually appears in the sequel or not.

It's also worth noting that, at the end of Iron Man 3, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) destroys all of his Iron Man suits, with many fans wondering how Stark would fit into the Avengers: Age of Ultron story without his high-tech suits. However, James Rhodes' War Machine and Iron Patriot suits were not destroyed. Is it possible that Rhodes could be subbing for the iron-less Tony Stark?

Joss Whedon is directing this Marvel Phase Two sequel from his own screenplay, with production scheduled to begin in March 2014.

Avengers: Age of Ultron comes to theaters May 1st, 2015 and stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr., Elizabeth Olsen, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Cobie Smulders, Jeremy Renner. The film is directed by Joss Whedon.

@undeadslayer4 I think he will rebuild the iron man suits or make more of them, because we can't have another marvel movie with Robert Downey Jr playing Tony Stark with out the iron man suits, now can we ? ;)

@cvntstop Yeah, I mean, the war machine suit was cool too, but the iron patriot suit was better looking and cooler.

@Erikajinx ...I agree he should come back as War Machine, will be too silly to have 2 patriotic themed characters in the film

Neither Patriot or War Machine will "fill in" for Iron Man. They already said they're fixing their screw-up in Iron Man 3 and keeping Tony as Iron Man. They're going to have both Iron Man AND War Machine (or Iron Patriot) in Age of Ultron. Sh*t Movieweb, get it together.
