Could 'The Vampires Chronicles' Reboot Star Robert Downey Jr. as Lestat?

Universal is looking to bring back Anne Rice's popular vampire novel series.
Robert Downey Jr. to star in The Vampires Chronicles?
Robert Downey Jr. to star in The Vampires Chronicles?
Bloody Disgusting has reported today that Universal Studios is looking to resurrect Anne Rice's popular novel series The Vampire Chronicles, which came to the big screen in 1994 with Neil Jordan's Interview with the Vampire, starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, and then hit the direct-to-DVD market in the Michael Rymer sequel Queen Of The Damned, starring Aaliyah and Stuart Townsend. The biggest revelation about this news is that Robert Downey Jr. is eyeing the role of Lestat, the vampire originally portrayed by Tom Cruise, and then later recast with Stuart Townsend in the lesser follow-up.

There is no word on how Universal plans to role out this proposed series of films. The first film would be titled The Vampire Chronicles, with Downey Jr. portraying Lestat Du Lioncort, a nobleman-turned-vampire leaving in the 18th century.

We'll alert you as soon as an official announcement is made about both the film, and Robert Downey Jr.'s part in it.

I loved the "Queen of the Damned" movie, but it didn't really follow the story of the books. For instance, Marius, in the books, did not create Lestat as a vampire. It was a vampire named Magnus. That's just one thing, but they also left out the story behind Akasha's creation, which was a very epic story, if I do say so myself... And it involved not ONLY Maharet, but also her twin sister, Mekare. Now, I still liked the movie, but I'm really interested in seeing how they interpret the books into movies. As far as Lestat goes, Townsend had the right accent, and attitude, but Tom Cruise had everything (EXCEPT the accent). He was an odd choice that REALLY worked out nicely.

Well I'm assuming not all vampires are identical so different colors of natural hair seem normal to me. Then again I didn't read any of these vampire chronicle related books so I wouldn't know lol. There are only a few vampire movies I do like, which is sad cause they are pretty interesting character wise. I also saw Interview a couple years ago and it wasn't that great, but maybe if I would have seen it when it came out at the time I would have probably liked it more. I think that's why people like so many "cult classics" because they saw them as kid or whatever. Like if you watch that movie Little Monsters it sucks. But I remember as it being f*cking rad as a kid until I watched it a while ago as an adult lol. That could just be me though I can't really watch kiddy things anymore it's not enough to hold my attention.

Chad I hope to God you are kidding. They couldn't even get Lestat's hair color right in Queen of the Damned.

Inteview was okay, Queen was better. Get Stuart Townsend again for Lestat.

Lestat is known as the "Brat Prince" and Cruise pulled that off wonderfully and Louis a submissive bitch, which Pitt did great with. I don't want to see a remake, just another story from the books and DON'T combine books for god sakes.

The only casting choice that was questionable for "Interview with the Vampire," was Antonio Banderas as Armand. Like Messenger brought up, for one, Armand was Russian... And another thing, Armand is seventeen years old or so when he is made into a vampire... So the age thing goes into play. However, Antonio did great, and the movie was great as well.

Downey is the man dont get me wrong. . . . but casting errors nearly killed the first Vampire Chronicles. . . lets not start this new incarnation by repeating the same mistakes. This time they should get people that resemble the characters.

Again we see that Hollywood can't have an original idea.

Too much talk about vampires. When is The Wolfman coming out? That's what I want to see. And we need another Frankenstein movie. Something good like the original Boris Karloff version, so I can forget about that errible Robert Deniro one and the monster from Van Helsing for that matter. And the monster should not talk. I know he spoke inthe sequel to the original, but I always thought that, that was hokey and lame.

Not only no, but hell no, Downey is completely wrong for the part. I like the idea of O'Loughlin but I think people would expect Mick from Moonlight instead of Lestat. Could work though but I think it would depend on what kind of contract he is under for his new show on CBS, Three Rivers.

  13. TVtoMovies

Alex O'Loughlin should play the role of Lestat. He did a brilliant job playing a vampire in Moonlight. He's 33 years old, hot, sexy, and so manly. He would give Lestat life. Robert Downey, Jr. is too old for the part and he is too quirky in my opinion.

Regardless of who read the books or not and what their opinions are, it doesn't matter. They still need to continue the franchise further rather than reboot it. That would be a complete misstep.

Also Interview, the movie and the book I loved. Both were good in their own right. The only thing I didn't like about the movie Antonio playing Armand. A Hispanic playing a Russian wasn't the best of choices.

Dazzle I really hope you don't think that True Blood is a good show. If you do God help you cause from B-M-E that show is probably one of the WORST shows on television. And we aren't even talking about opinions at this point. Basic, fundamental things that give grounds for what can be called good is totally fumbled in True Blood.

No ... no ... definitely not. "Interview" was an insipid movie and, with the exception of introducing a young Kirsten Dunst to movie screens, was not only a waste of a $12 movie ticket, but a poor representation of the sensational book. It made Cruise, Pitt AND Banderas ALL look foolish ... and I won't even comment on their ludicrous hairdos. PLEASE don't do this to my idol, Robert Downey Jr. If RDJ has a burning desire to show his chops as a vampire, let him do a guest shot on True Blood. Now THERE'S a good vampire show!

  18. Coldsun

Okay really? I dont mind RDJ...much. But to make him into the vampire of ALL VAMPIRES is simply a no. I do admire RDJ and his level of skill at his art, but to pull off a role this dark and be convincing at the same time, I really dont believe he could pull that off. I would be more then happy to see this movie rehashed but we need a real vampire and a hell of an actor. Not just a name they slap onto a movie to get more tickets sold.

And what is with Hollywood and reboots? I mean really? Maybe its time to go out to the audience and take in some ideas and formulate something. Im sure half the general pop on here has at least an idea or two. Lets go Hollywood get on the ball. Lets see something original.

Nice. I hope they make it & mAKE IT LIKE THE ORIGINAL WHICH WAS awesome !!!!!!!! Queen of the Damned was alright, but HATED lil buddy from Korn in it !! Plus Downey Jr. is a fine actor & would play an interestingly great vampire !!!!!

  21. CelluloidDreams

To bring it back now just feels wrong. It feels like a series that time has just passed by, and so much of Rice has been ripped off by every vampire series after that it's not going to really offer anything new.

  22. CelluloidDreams

I love Robert Downey Jr. ....BUT HELL NO!!

Neil Jordan's "Interview with the Vampire" sucked big time ... 1 of the "Worst Films" of 1994!!

    Neil Jordan destroyed the book!

I think Hollywood should leave well enough alone!!!

I trust Vamp and Messengers judgment since they read the book. I like Downey but maybe this isn't best for him. But do not recast Tom or the other dude. Get someone else that "fits the part".

Rice's story of why the Devil and God are in a scuff is awesome. Yeah but why reboot it?

  30. CBF

    This is dumb-as-hell news.

First of all, there are only two movies so far in the series anyway, and how are you gonna redo it all over after only two movies, not to mention throw away a classic like "Interview"?

I think the series needs more chapters, and NEVER a reboot. Why can't they continue off from "Queen" or do the next novel after that? I had heard back in the day that Tom Cruise's company had bought the rights to the next book and were planning that for the future of the series. Not that he would star in it, but would produce it for sure. I think the book they were planning on adapting was, "The Tale of the Body Thief." So then what happened with that?

    Not cool.
