SDCC 2011: Robert Rodriguez Announces Return of Heavy Metal

During Robert Rodriguez's presentation in Hall H today, the filmmaker revealed that he has acquired the rights to remake the 80's classic animated film, Heavy Metal, and has big plans. Take a look...

"Hi, this is Robert Rodriguez...

I recently acquired the rights to Heavy Metal to make a large-scale media project and an animated film. I've always been a fan of Heavy Metal and Heavy Metal magazine.

I think one of the ideas I always believed in, is international artists coming together to show their best work. And when I ask other fans what they think, they all want to work on it. So I thought it would be really cool if everyone got the chance.

So what I'm doing with this website is having you submit ideas for stories, characters, or worlds that we can use in these projects or in the animated film. In any which way you can put together: written out, drawn, maybe even shot. You know, the more you can do to get the idea across, the better because I'd really like to make this a collaborative effort.

Some of the stories we're working on already, but I'm leaving a slot open for the audience who has been so good to Heavy Metal and who has always believed in Heavy Metal and what it could be. And i think it would be great if we all participated together and made this the best version of Heavy Metal that ever existed.

So I hope you can join us for...Heavy Metal."

Heavy Metal was released August 7th, 1981 and stars Rodger Bumpass, John Candy, Jackie Burroughs, Joe Flaherty, Don Francks, Martin Lavut, Marilyn Lightstone, Eugene Levy. The film is directed by Gerald Potterton.

Let's think positive guys. This, at least, will be a great opportunity for creative people with no connection to any kind of movie industry to get a chance to shine.

Well, I'm no insider but I have been on enough local sets, big and small and done enough projects on my own to know how inspiration for certain things come and go very quickly.

@shuabert -- If that's true, that really, really sucks. Regardless, this may be a neat idea, let's just hope he doesn't turn into Treyarch.

Oy vey, yet another remake? Why not out an original story of it's own called Heavy Metal? Sheesh! That being said, I remember watching the original at the local drive In theater when I was in grade school. Thanks Sis!

Last year David Fincher was signed to do a Heavy Metal remake. I guess that project just died?

@messenger I know you deleted your post, and in turn I removed mine. I think that the difference here is between fan and insider. You see things in a different scope because the guy works in the same industry as you, and perhaps you want to work with him one day, if you haven't already (for that, I wish you good luck, or congratulations, respectively). As a fan though, one can't help but want what one wants, and seeing the guy just finish Spy Kids 4 (needless, by all accounts), and heap more and more on his plate, makes me think he is avoiding the one project I wish he would do. But hey, like I said about another film tonight, he has time to prove me wrong, in which case I will happily accept some heat for being so. He said "if it happens, it will be this year." Well, counting the rest of 2011, he has 17 months to make me eat my words. Here's hoping that comes to pass.

I didn't delete your response I deleted my own. Oh no, I get your point. It's the whole douche thing that I found unfair. He'll get to it and he will do a great job with it.
But who knows what he is ready for and he isn't ready for I'm speaking from my own experiences with projects. Anyways, have a good one. I'll see you around.

@messenger It's incredibly silly that you've kept this up all night. I let you slide when you deleted your comment earlier by deleting my response, but now you're just being annoying. I see your point, but clearly you don't get mine. Go back and read what he said in the Sin City/Machete article. He says "If it happens." Then recognize the fact that he is heaping other projects on his plate, and seems excited for them. Well that's wonderful. I'm glad he wants do soooo much. But like I said earlier, if he keeps putting more projects in front of him, he won't get to the Sin City and Deadpool films that are pretty much universally wanted. Also, that whole spiel you went through about having to be in the right mindset to tackle a sequel? Rodriguez oddly enough has no problem delving back into Spy Kids, which he wrote, produced, and directed. But Sin City, what he doesn't have to write, is difficult to get into? BS, bro, major BS. Now read these words carefully, okay? As I wrote earlier, if he doesn't want to do it, that's fine, but give the project to someone else. Don't waste everyone's time by putting the project off. How hard is it for him to make Sin City a priority, or find someone else that will? And how hard is it for you to understand that is all I'm saying?

    @ejk1

You missed my entire point, working on a film for two years can take its toll on someone and they have to be in the right mind set to tackle it again. For me and I'm sure many others out there that when I work on something for so long I'm eager to work on something else, to do something new but when I'm ready to go back to my previous work, I can because I've had time to rest. It's incredibly silly that you call someone a douche because they can't or won't give YOU what YOU want when YOU want it.

@messenger yeah, yeah, blah, blah. Whatever man. He'll make a movie that'll knock my socks off? Not if he doesn't start working on that particular film, instead of acquiring more projects that will drain him of his passion.

  14. Messenger

I'm not just defending him, I'm defending all filmmakers. Filmmakers put so much time into projects that it consumers EVERY aspect of their lives and it's very draining. There are some screenplays that I've written that have me waking up every hour of the night with ideas that pop in to my head and that's just the tip of the iceberg. After spending two years on a project a director needs time, who knows what that time frame is but when they get to it and the passion has built back up they will make a movie that will knock your socks off.

@messenger You don't need to keep defending him, bro. I'm not asking him to produce the film to be released next week, I just want it to be his top priority. He keeps putting things on his plate, and nothing will get eaten, know what I mean? If he has all of these other projects in the works, when will he get to Sin City 2? What if he decides to pick up other projects? Does SC2 get pushed back farther? Like I said, he needs to get to work, or let someone else take the reins.

Do you really want him to work on a project that he isn't ready to do yet? If he did make it right now and it came out sub par or worse I'm sure you wouldn't be happy with him. Let the dude get to it in his own time and I'm sure it will be great. You can't force yourself to do something you aren't ready to do yet.
