"We're sort of putting a slightly different spin on Steve Rogers," said Joe Johnston, whose past directing credits include "Jurassic Park III" and "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids." He's a guy that wants to serve his country, but he's not a flag-waver. We're reinterpreting, sort of, what the comic book version of Steve Rogers was."
"He wants to serve his country, but he's not this sort of jingoistic American flag-waver," Johnston said. "He's just a good person. We make a point of that in the script: Don't change who you are once you go from Steve Rogers to this super-soldier; you have to stay who you are inside, that's really what's important more than your strength and everything. It'll be interesting and fun to put a different spin on the character and one that the fans are really going to appreciate."
"Yeah, and it's also the idea that this is not about America so much as it is about the spirit of doing the right thing," the director said. "It's an international cast and an international story. It's about what makes America great and what make the rest of the world great too."

Either way would be fine with me. If it was very pro-America, I'm cool with that, or if it wants to go a more PC route, fine too. I believe America rocks (said without arrogance, I just love my country, and people from other countries should love their countries as well), and Captain America rocks, so yeah :)

I love how termites came out of the woodwork when this film was first announced and every post then on for a year; all about how this is gonna be cheesy, and patriotic, and only pertain to Americans. They were complaining left and right. And now they say they are going to tone it down a bit, and it still gets bashed. When you hate a project before hand, your just gonna continue to dislike it.
This is a smart move. the early versions of Cap were really gung-ho, and soldiery. We ahve to be realistic. Steve Rogers was a frail/weak teenager. He wasn't testosterone. He was kind hearted and wanted to serve his country. Why? for the GOOD of MANKIND, by helping his country: America, win the war. So when he is transformed he is not gonna be going, "Die you Nazi f*ckers!" No, he's gonna do what he needs to, to protect freedom. I like this approach, and its logical money wise.

When I say he should appeal to the world, I don't mean he has to be speak a bunch of different languages or something. I just think it's a cool approach that they're taking, and one that we should give a chance. I don't know about you, but I don't wanna watch a movie with the main message being "America rocks and f*ck everyone else!" I want to watch a guy doing the right thing because it's the right thing to do.

This statement really isn't anything to get pissed off about, people. You're jumping to conclusions.
Johnston states that he doesn't want the character to be "jingoistic," which is "extreme nationalism characterized by a belligerent foreign policy." In other words, he's still patriotic, he just doesn't go overboard with it. Read it carefully. There's nothing here to get riled up about here.
To me, America is a country for the world, and it's a shame so many ignorant people don't see it that way. Some people seem to forget that we don't have your own language. We speak ENGLISH, not AMERICAN. America appeals to the entire world. That's why so many people come here looking for new opportunities. So, if America appeals to the entire world, then Captain America should, too.
When I read this statement, I didn't assume Johnston was trying to strip the character of what makes him great. Before he becomes this super-soldier, he's this scrawny little man. Then after he's transformed, he's expected to lead an army into war. Think about that. It seems to me that the movie is trying to humanize Cap a little more...make him more relateable, which is fine as long as he still kicks ass.

@Jacob89 i know but im just pissed they have to tone down the character to make him appeal to the world, i firmly believe in my mind this is the greatest country in the world, despite what's going on right now, and to take a iconic character and like i said tone it down so others might not get offended because America solely has a movie based around a great character, i think its messed up we have to do this to make other's happy, when hardcore Capt fans are gonna be pissed, just like @Cyn de Harven pointed out, how they took out one of superman's key lines, one he has been saying since his creation so it wouldn't piss of people who hate this great nation, I say love it or leave, and if you don't like USA fine, cause we don't like you, i just think its bullsh*t how our patriotism has to be toned down but if it was about another hero from another country not a damn thing would be altered

It's the same bullsh*t reason they removed "...and the American way" from Superman Returns.
So as not to piss of any rabid US-haters off. (Do rabid US-haters pay to see American movies anyway?)
I say who gives a sh*t. If you don't want to go see some good old fashioned US patriotism, then don't pay for a damn ticket to see a good old fashioned US superhero.

You can't really judge the film just yet based only on this statement.
I think the point Johnston is trying to get across is that Cap won't be hard-core, "America for the win and f*ck everyone else!" He's just a genuinely good person.

WTF... is this not America's superhero? is this not a about American who never was thought as much, and becomes a hero that inspires to do more... just like the American spirit!
just lost this American's $10 at the theater for this unpatriotic waste of an American Icon!

i hope this movie turns out right but i am pissed to that he has taking a character that was Created By Americans for Americans and dumb him down to please others, that's bullsh*t. That's like giving a Buddhist a skinny Buddha statue and telling him. NO ITS OK ITS POLITICALLY CORRECT FOR HIM TO BE SMALLER. total bullsh*t. Why don't you wipe your ass with the flag Joe Johnston, yeah im pissed, because if it was another character representing another country they wouldn't dare change a thing and everyone here knows it,

I think it will work, too,but it's still a lame-ass attempt to appease the "politically correct" element of the audience. And as for the whole "it's not about America so much as it is about the spirit of doing the right thing?" His name is CAPTAIN AMERICA, not CAPTAIN OF DOING THE RIGHT THING. You idiot.

sell out... didn't they already have a psuedo-hero like that? his name was Captain Planet. "WIth our powers combined..." (and he was lame - for the record)
Joe... you're losing me... there is a way to be purely American, patriotic and still culturally aware. Think immediate post 9-11 America... all colors, creeds, etc. pulled together as ONE nation. that's what makes us so great as a nation. how dare you strip this hero of that.
