While James Cameron's first film in 12 years did solid business on opening weekend, it seemed it did even better than first thought. According to Variety, Avatar's posted a bigger Sunday at the box office than originally expected, and the film's opening weekend take now stands at $77.3 million.
If the numbers hold up, the film will have broken the record for a December opening weekend, just edging out the 2007 film I Am Legend, which took in $77.2 million on its opening weekend. It was originally reported here yesterday that Avatar took in an estimated $73 million on opening weekend.
James Cameron's Avatar opened in 3,452 theaters this past weekend, with 2,052 theaters playing the film in the 3D format.
Avatar was released December 18th, 2009 and stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Joel Moore, Giovanni Ribisi, Michelle Rodriguez, Laz Alonso. The film is directed by James Cameron.
