Sondheim fan here and to be honest, I'm kinda wary of this film version of "Sweeney Todd". Will Burton & Co. cut most of the music/lyrics and give us an un-musical, watered down "Swenney Todd" along the lines of "Dreamgirls"? Will Depp's lack of vocal verissimitude as evidenced in the trailer be on par with Madonna's massacre of "Evita"? Sure, he's a fine actor and Burton makes it all LOOK pretty but what did Shakespeare say; "The PLAY'S The thing!". What makes "Sweeney Todd" great is Sondheim's score. I hope Burton has the "guts" to give us an unabashed MUSICAL and truly change the art form. I have no doubt the movie will look fantastic but that's not enough. And by the way, does it piss anyody else off the the music at the top of the trailer is obviously NOT Sondheim?
